Dealer is blaming noise in radio on window tint

Hey guys I know that alot of you have your windows tinted, so im asking you for your help. I started experincing a buzz/hum from the radio a little while back(can't remember if it started before or after the windows were tinted), but the car never left my sight when it was being done so I know he didn't unplug anything or cut anything. This is the second day they have had the car and I just got a call saying the they suspect the window tint is causing the problem. It there anyway I can fight this? I might have to take it to another dealer.

Noise when? Playing CD, tape or radio? FM? AM? What kind of noise? Does it change with the engine RPM, or is hit hiss? static?

Is the dealer saying this because the rear deck was removed for the tint install, or are they saying the tint is covering the antenna and causing issues?

Noise is there all the time, doesn't matter if its playing CD or radio. It does change with engine rpm.

He said some tint has metalic in it and could short out the antenea in the rear window, or it could be that when removing the rear brakelight they messed up disconnecting something. But I told them that I was there the whole time and the guy never disconnected anything. He slid the tint down behind the thirdbrake light

I think I remember hearing from a guy at a tint shop that ,metallic tint can interfere with the antenna on the back window.

If it is happening all the time, then I say they are just using that as an excuse. If it was only when playing AM/FM, then it does make sense that the tint could interfere with the antenna and give static, etc.

Problem is that it is your word against theirs. Explain to them that it happens when playing CD's and Tapes as well and that would have nothing to do with the antenna.

Have them check it and trace the problem......but be prepared....if they do somehow trace it back to the tint, then you would probably be charged.

Sounds like a grounding problem more than an interference problem.

Yeah if it happens with CD's & tapes the antenna has nothing to do with that. If it changes with engine RPM that also has nothing to do with the antenna. Sounds like a ground problem to me also.

If the radio reception is screwed up then it could be the tint or more likely the tint guy cut one of the antenna traces in the rear window (happens a lot) .If the radio is making noise all the time (CD TAPE RADIO) then the issue lies elsewhere .More than likely the headunit is toast .

My thoughts exactly. The antenna is only used with AM or FM.

Thanks for all the replies guys

I just talked to the service advisor again and I explained to him that it does happen when the CD player is in use. He agreed and said he wasn't pointing fingers at anyone but they just want all the information they can to find the problem.

Im glad you responded Jens H. The radio reception is not hindered at all. Its just a buzz/humm which gets louder with engine rpm. I can guaratee that none of the traces were cut because I was there from start to finish of the install. The installer cut the tint to fit outside and then moved it inside and never took a knife in the car

I get a whistle when I'm listening to tapes. At higher speeds/rpms, the whistling is louder...only happens for tapes and not for cd's or radio.

Anyone else experience this?

If the dealer says its an antenna problem, then discard it by unpligging the antenna from the back of the radio.

They are bullshiting you IMO. As many people stated, its very likely to be a grounding problem.

Re: Re: Dealer is blaming noise in radio on window tint

I had the same problem, with the buzz/hum. It changed and got more high pitched with higher RPM's. The problem was the ground. The alternator was somehow sending feedback. After I installed my new headunit I made sure it was ground well and I never had noise again.

Funny thing is that of the two dealerships with in a decent driving distance this is the better one. If I don't get the problem fixed I am heading down to PAA

From what I can tell in my last conversation with them, they have agreed with me that its not the window tint but they don't know what the problem is.

Yep, sounds like a grounding problem. For those who said something about metallic tint and antenna interference as a result. I have metallic tint and no problems as of yet.

I had a weird buzzzing sound coming out of my front tweeters that got louder the harder you pushed the car, and they couldnt figure it out. I took it in atleast 6 times before they finally realized the problem. They replaced my speakers twice, and nothing. The proble was the amp. Once they replaced the stock amp, it went away. Hope this helps.

Good news guys:

Dealer called me today and said my car was ready. They replaced the factory amp, which many of you have said was the problem. So to those who guessed right

I think it's time to avoid Bobby Rahal Acura at all costs. Bobby Rahal - famous racer - and this dealership won't even discuss COMPTECH installs. And based on how long it appears to have taken these clowns to figure out there was a problem with the amp, I'd definitely not want them working on on my car if there was something more serious. Seems they just wanted to take the easy route and blame the tint as opposed to troubleshooting the problem. All they had to do was install any CD and realize it wasn't the tint effecting the entire audio system. This is why I don't have my car worked on by any PA dealership - they all seem to be lacking in basic maintenance/troubleshooting/repair skills. what a joke!

True I totally agree with you. I took it there mainly because I didn't think there would be this much of a problem.
