custom intake

well i just finsied a custom intake, first let me tell you why i made it, well first i wanted a combination of different intakes not just one design, i like the short ram style intakes for their top end power, i like the cold air intake for the cold air they brought, and i like the aem v2 for its resonace and down low torque, but no one offered an intake that was all three combined so i made one, its an V2/short ram/cold air box design, the first pics are of the intake in the testing phase, it was just flat black paint, it works really good you can feel the extra power at about 1500rpm, and it starts to growl at about 2000-2500rpm while the previous short ram you could only hear at vtec and on, and it only made power at top end. the next pics you will see are the finished intake that i just got today from the powered coater, and waiting to be installed tomorrow. pics of the install will follow, i will try to get to a dyno but the local one is down and the next cloesest one wants 150 an hour to run the car forget that, the local guy wants 75, i'll wait untill they fix it. if you guys want you can take a look at my car domain site its got pics of the driving light bulb upgrades before/ matrix x-06 bulbs and the real polarg m6 bulbs, its also got a pics of the front brake upgrade and some other pics of the car and also concepts of what some different rims would look like on the car.

link to cardomain site my car domain

before pics of intake:

after: the powder coat looks blue but tis really silver its just they way the digital camera make it look.

Wow! Good custom job... I wouldn't mind sporting that if you ever plan on developing it.

Good work

good clean looking job man. hopefully you'll get to a dyno soon and get some positive results. love it when people do things they talk/think about instead of talk/think about them, props to you

Looks cool. Good job. How does it work? And does it sound as loud as the regular AEM type intake?

the pipe is standard manderal bent exhaust piping, the cold air box is made of sheetmetal.

Do u think it would be possible to cut my AEM intake shorter and move the filter up? would that make any difference?

i woudl not mess wit it, without the heatshield liek i made its going to suck in hto air and that will actually loose you power, just leave it as it is.

Want to make another one and ship it to me? I guess you'd have to make it a tiny bit bigger for a Type-S.

Just FYI, I did something similar to this several years ago:

New Intake

Yours looks much better though.

However, what I found on the dyno is that it wasn't any better. It made no more power than the stock system with the resonator removed. Plus, the hum coming from it at idle got annoying after some time. But the WOT sound was intoxication.

i see you added a filter and a box, but i didn't use the stock tubing from the thottle body to the filter because its got a resonance chamber built in, and its not smooth, it upsets the air flow, and also i am using 2 different size pipes to get the same effect a v2 intake does. i can't take it to the dyno to see what kinda power it makes because these guys have not fixed it yet, and i'm not going to drive 100 miles for the next closest dyno just to dyno the intake. maybe sometime in the future when they fix it i will have some numbers.

Actually no, the J32A2 6MT does not have a resonance chamber in the intake pipe. It has one in the inlet to the stock air box though. I see that yours is a CL-P with the J32A1 engine though so not a direct comparison.

How does the step down occur in yours?

You really should dyno with the stock system and with this to be sure. Sound can have an interesting affect on perceived power gains. I thought mine was doing better until I actually tested it back to back.

first i didn't know you had the type-s, so ok then never mind on the pipe. the step down is a pipe with in a pipe style, the smaller pipe actually goes about 6-10 inches into the longer pipe. for me it feels liek it has a lot more low end torque then it did before the intake, and i even ran a friends aem for a while and this one feels like it makes more power then the aem did, and it also sounds better. i would get it dynoed but i have a couple of problmes first the guys here charge $75 for on hour, next their dyno is broken, the next closest guy charges $150 an hour, and minum is 1 hour for both, so no thanks, 150 is too much for me, maybe later on when they fix it i will pay the $75 to get it dynoed.
