"custom" AEM short ram intake
Let me bounce this off you guys and let me know what you think.
So, since I'm more interested in the awseome sound the CAI gives the engine, rather than performance gains, I was wondering about taking the AEM w/ bypass CAI and only using the upper section (bypass-to-motor section) and installing the filter where the bypass should be. Is there room for the filter beside the battery? The pictures I've seen makes me think so (can't look in my car myself, cause it's in storage)
I guess this might be cheaper to get the one piece AEM (w/o bypass) and just cut it approx where the bypass would be to put on the filter.
My reasoning for even thinking about this is the problems seen w/ people and breaking bypasses. That, and the fact that my balls aren't big enough to live with the hydrolocking risk, so I want to mount the filter higher and forget the bypass. Will the shorter tube change the sound much?
Also, I saw that somebody. Unfortunately, I can't remember who this was, and can't find the thread, but was wondering if this gives the same sound? Seems to simplify the install a bunch.
Could always add one of those Land Rover snorkles to the intake...
If this doesn't work, I think I may just do an icebox, because it seems like the AEM isn't worth the trouble (but god that sound is oh so nice)
Thanks for the advice.

I haven't run it like this for about eight months now. As for sound differences than the standard AEM CAI, there is no difference. Performance wise it is negligible but would obviously suffer in traffic after the on set of heat soak.
