considering a repaint

both of my bumpers are in pretty bad shape (chips all over) and there are some pretty deep scratches here and there all over the car and there are chips on the hood as well. i have no idea how the previous owner got all these dings. i'm debating between aegean pearl blue and monterrey pearl blue (my car has a tan interior). can you please post your opinion?

If your car isn't already blue I wouldn't paint it.

my cars san marino red right now...this one reputable shop here in houston quoted me at $1300-1400 with lifetime warranty. so i guess most of you think that a tan interior would go well with the ABP then? hmm...

Are they going to pull the motor? Otherwise you're going to have a red engine bay and a blue car.

yeah what he said, you door jambs, inside the trunk etc.. would all need to be done. or it would look horrific. milano red looks alot better than SMR if you ask me and you wouldn't see as much of a contrast.

and $1400 i would be cautious of the quality of work, they will guarantee the paint from peeling etc but will it be painted correctly i would wonder

they said they'd paint everything short of pulling the motor...so the door jambs and everything thats pretty much visible when you pop the hood would be blue also (or most of it i guess). about the quality of work, quite a few people have recommended this place on a houston forum. maybe i should just repaint it red...

Repainting your entire car will hurt your resale value if you go to trade it in. They'll wonder if it's been in a bad accident even if you tell them it hasn't. Furthermore, painting it a different color will REALLY kill it wether you trade it or sell it outright. Like mrsteve said, I wouldn't do it. Lastly, $1400 for a complete.... Who are they kidding? It will look like shit and you will NEVER be happy with it. Trust me!

well i've heard good things about them from other houston people, but i will check out their work before i go there. i'm probably just gonna go for repainting it red again (maybe milano, but i just have to check out that color first). lastly, would a potential buyer be able to tell that the car was repainted red again? i'm not that concerned about the resale value because after i finish pharmacy school i'll be making more than enough money so that won't be an issue. plus it's already been in a pretty bad accident before (that's why i got it for so cheap) so how much more can the resale value drop? i just needed a newer car because my '95 accord was giving me too many problems.

Well, the average person might not be able to tell it's been painted but anyone with a trained eye will. Especially if the paint shop doesn't break the car down to about nothing but the body (removing exterior trim peices of course). If they don't, you will have red overspray and paint lines all over everything. Molding edges and rubber seals, glass, light fixtures, etc.. Your resale value could drop any where from $500 to $1,500 for a complete repaint. Unless of course, you own a 1989 Tempo, then it might actually help you. When I did used car reconditioning for a dealer ship's sales team, I used 4-5 diffeerent body shops at a time (one of which I actually worked at too). I don't care what anybody says all body shops do good work AND bad work unless they have one paint guy and one body man that does everything good or vise versa. That being said, I do not include Macco, I used them twice and I would never recomend them to anyone, including an enemy... Well maybe the guy with the 22's in the photo gallery. I hope this helps.

thanks for all the info chriskh, i appreciate any input anyone on this board gives me. i did a search on that other forum i was talking about and one of the employees from that shop said that they take off everything (bumper covers, headlights, etc.). so do you suggest that i keep the car the way it is with all the dings and deep scratches (looks like from other people hitting their door against my car).

I would not paint the car personally. You can have the dings taken out by a dent wizard for much less $, then have the car professionaly buffed and polished. This should take care of most of it. Also, there are guys that do airbrush touch up for the deep scratches and rock chips too. All of these things will save you hundreds of dollars if not thousands if you find the right places and you'll still retain the original paint.

Not worth it. Your car is only worth $10,000 as it is now.

mine was repainted-the whole car-a year after it was new cause of a combination of severe hail damage, hit and run in a parking lot, and many dings and scratches from a parking lot.

if i left it the way it was, i couldnt get shit for it if i was to sell it, so i got a new hood, trunk, front and rear bumper, left front fender and roof-yes roof. you can tell the car was repainted only by looking at the rocker panel when you open the door, a solution i hope the RonJon kit will solve

point being i drive it alot, am keeping it for a long time, and wanted it to look "new" again. if you cant stand looking at it and aren't worried about the resale, then do it..

ask them how many coats and if they are going to clear coat the car also

I got rear-ended and had the entire car re-painted. The body shop said it would have cost at least a couple grand to get just the paint job. $1400 is nuts. It will be a crap job. Just mu opinion. I would keep the SMR. It's not worth it to change the entire color.
