An intake is definately worth it. I'm not a fan of the AEM. But that's just my opinion. I think it's too loud. I had it for a couple months and changed it for a Comptech Icebox. The Icebox looks cleaner and it's a little louder than stock. The HPS gains are about the same for the AEM and Icebox. The Icebox is slightly more.

There are other issues with the AEM, like a greater risk of hydrolock if you drive through some water and also the support stem at the base of the tube has been known to break.

Anyways....there is a sticky that you should read through....

And welcome to the money pit.

AEM is a decent intake, but if you don't need the sound or the looks, get a Comptech Icebox. It's got the best gains out there and keeps the engine bay looking close to stock. I've had both, the sound of the AEM at VTEC is great and it's nice to be able to change headlamp bulbs w/out removing the intake, but the Comptech is the better of the two and costs almost the same. As far as short shifters go, I'm pretty sure there's only a couple short throw shifter kits, no one makes an actual short shifter for our cars. If you would change the knob though, that makes a big difference in shifter height. Just make sure you get one that the shifter can go all the way into.

Now that that's out of the way, welcome to the forum Make sure you check the FAQs and general 2nd gen info here: https://acurazine.com/forums/acurazine-clubs-meets-15/chicago-cruisin-66-car-show-invite-181322/

Looks like Ravi beat me to it, but you get the idea (plus mine's a direct link to the thread)

and if you do get headers, save up for the Comptechs to save yourself from any leak or other problems.

btw, welcome aboard!
