CL S interior/ exterior color question
I noticed a 2001 Acura CL S advertised in the Toronto, Canada Auto Trader. It is silver, but, with the tan interior. Since every single 2001 CL S in Canada was sold with the black interior, I assumed it had to be a US car. The seller confirmed that and also that the car is a theft recovery that he has put back together. Price is on the low end ($17,900 Cdn. asking price, including GST with something around 32,000 miles, however, obviously no factory warranty).
I don't recall seeing silver US CL S's with tan interiors. Are they simply rarer because I haven't seen pics of them or has this fellow created his own, one of a kind color combination?

definitely not a misprint as he sent me pics of the car. It's a silver Type S with the tan interior. Looks a little wierd in my opinion. The steering wheel surround is black and in other tan interiors, the steering wheel is a taupe color. The air bags are also out of the car, although he indicates he will replace them at no extra charge on the car. If you or others here are interested in what this apparently one off color combo looks like, email me and I'll send you the pics and you could post them here.
I'm assuming that when the car was stolen, the black interior was completely gutted and this fellow managed to get a deal on a tan interior CL S and likely wasn't aware they didn't come that way from the factory. He claims everything works on the car, but, who knows?
If any Toronto area CL S owners are curious, email me and I'll pass along this guy's phone number and you can check it out first hand. He has several other CL's as well, so perhaps he's mating them and the offspring are a little iffy.

Sounds like a redo. Someone painted it silver and/or switched out the black interior. The only US CLS with tan interior were white, black, red. I have brochures showing color choices for all 3 years. The color on this car has been altered.
I bet up close it wouldn't take long to figure out the original color set up. Does the VIN # indicate color?

I don't believe the VIN indicates color, however, looking at the pics, I think the car was originally silver. The cost to repaint the entire car, plus engine compartment, etc. is considerable and given the price this fellow is asking, assuming the low mileage is genuine and everything works as he claims, I doubt he'd be able to recoup the cost of a color change in his price. Of course, if he's taken the entire interior and dash out of a tan interiored car, I guess the mileage showing on the odometer doesn't say much for the actual mileage on this car's engine, tranny and body.
In any event, rather than speculate without you guys seeing the pics, someone that can post pics, please email me and I'll send you back the pics and then all of you can see what I'm seeing.

I've been attempting to send the pics to Chaptorial who offered to host them here, however, I'm not having any success with them making it to his email address. I have no idea what the problem is, some tech glitch I assume.
My email appears to be working normally.
If there is anyone else who happens to be reading here that is willing to host the pics, just email me directly at pnwarren@shaw.ca and I'll forward the pics right back to you. There are 12 pics in total showing the exterior, interior and under the hood.

Interesting looks clean in the pix. I've had both interior colors and the rear seat door is black metal on both colors, but the 2 buttons on the dash left left of the steering wheel should be tan. Seat belts are wrong color as mentioned.
A flood sounds plausible cause who would go to all the trouble to switch out all that just for aesthetics.
I'd try to find out previous owners and any info on damage.

As I mentioned above, the seller claimed he bought it as a theft recovery. For what it's worth he claimed that all the damage was confined to the interior which was missing most of its components. He did not say that he changed the interior color, but, I'm guessing that he just got a deal on a tan interior from a wrecking yard or someplace similar and likely didn't check to see if the silver color ever came with a tan interior.
Given that he hasn't replaced the airbags yet, although he says he will at no cost to the buyer, I'm not convinced that he managed to get everything 100% right on the rest of the car. I'm not sure if telling someone that a car is a theft recovery sounds that much better than a flood repair if that was what happened as its obvious he's basically replaced the entire interior and he couldn't sell it if it wasn't running properly.
Bigger issue in my mind is the fact that he is claiming the current mileage on the tan dashboard is the mileage on the car (ballpark 32,000 miles), but, obviously, a buyer would want to know what the mileage was on the engine, tranny and body of the car just before it was stolen (or flooded).

Why would a theft create a situation where the entire interior would need replacing. If a thief or vandals are gonna mess up a car, the exterior is gonna get it too.
Could be one of those chop jobs where they but together the front of one car and the rear of another and the interiors were diff. I'm just guessing.
Chopper is right, too many unknowns.

The car is located more than a couple of thousand miles away from me, and given what I was already concerned about, I was not seriously considering the car. On the other hand, if the seller chopped the price by a bit more than half....heh, heh.
I was just curious about the interior/exterior color combo as I had never seen a silver Type S with tan interior before. My guess is that he'll likely find a buyer somewhere in the $15,000 Cdn range (approx. $11,000 US range) if he replaces the air bags and makes sure the car is running properly. At that price, I don't think the buyer will be getting a good buy, but, since legitimate silver Type S's with 32,000 original miles will be selling in the $21,500 - $23,500 Cdn range in his part of the country, someone will "think" they are getting a "steal". I'm certain the grief and aggravation will come later, so in order to justify buying it, you would have to be into the car very, very cheaply...much lower than the seller's actual final cost.

Why are the Tan air bags deployed? Becasue the car that had the Tan inside was in a crash or is it because the silver car was in a crash? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

This one smells Fishy!
Notice the air freshener right by the gear shift, something smells fishy on this one!
That car may or may not even be safe to drive.

The air bags are out of the tan interior because that car was likely wrecked so that the seller could salvage the interior out of it. If the silver car was merely wrecked rather than gutted, it would still have had the black interior in it. Had the silver car been both wrecked AND gutted, there could not possibly have been any financial incentive for the seller to attempt the repair.
The air freshener brings up the other possibility that nobody has mentioned. A flood car that has had the whole interior replaced likely won't smell as long as the body was properly cleaned before the new interior was reinstalled.Typically however, a messy suicide (gun to the head) or a natural death inside a closed car and the body doesn't get found for awhile will require a complete replacement of the entire interior, but, the body and mechanicals are fine. Perhaps the seller cheaped out on the seat belts and steering wheel (possibly headliner) and they contained residual odour.
"Be the only one on your block to own a funky smelling, low interior mileage, black seat belted with contrasting interior, highly individualistic CL Type S. Cheap! Ideal for those on a limited budget with a head cold."

Too many questions, not enough information. I think the silver/tan colors don't go together - I would bypass it...
If you want to sell it down the road, a knowledgeable buyer might have the same reservations....
Also, is it just the pic, or is the front bumper dinged?
Cheers!

basically from the engine compartment. The CL-P engine looks a little different on top. If you do some searching around for engine compartment pics of the CL-S and CL-P you should be able to see the differences.
The interior is definitely out of a CL-S, you can see the perforated leather as opposed to the smooth leather on the CL-P.
The wheels are obviously CL-S, but, of course people with CL-P's could put CL-S wheels on their cars.

Thanks, I always wondered about that. If someone managed to find a wrecked CL-S to source the tan interior, could he have swapped engine covers/rims/shift knob while he was at it?
