CL insurance 50% higher than TL?

Kiplingers has a 2002 car buyer's guide this month. Of course I had to see what they said about our cars. They show the annual insurance cost of the CL around 1550 and the TL around 1050. WTF? I know coupes usually cost more, but damn. Interestingly, the Type S versions of each car had insurance costs within a couple of bucks on the premium. So a CL-P would cost $500/year more to insure than a TL-S despite the extra 35HP. Its this right or are they smoking crack?

i think it depends more on the insurance company than the type of car...afterall, it is kiplingers "car buyers guide", not "insurance buyers guide".

after working part time for an insurance agency for 3 years, i'm sure it's a typo. if motortrend, a magazine ABOUT cars can make a mistake and say the cl-s has a turbocharged dohc engine, it's probably as or more likely that a guide on cars is wrong about insurance. especially considering insurance rates vary so much from location to location as well as from driver to driver.

I think that it is correct.

I was paying $1,200 a year for my 98 Accord EX.

Now, it has jumped to $1,600 a year.

45, single with 2 accidents (not my fault) and my insurance did not bump insurance up.

This is true, Mine is $2,200 every 6 months out of NY, because i'm a 18 year old kid with this car, well 17 when I got it.
Also on my dad's plan and my mom has two accidents and one ticket and my dad has the highest premiums

I was quoted down here at 1,833 every 6 months here for mid range coverage.

But if I had a TL it would be 1,400 every 6 months

Insurance

I just called Mercury Insurance today to get a quote on adding another car to my policy. I found out that the CL-S has been rated with a rating of 19. I called about a month before and the agent I talked to then said that it was a 13. We also have a 2002 Honda Accord EX and that rating didn't change (rating of 14). I didn't ask about the TL.

Maybe there is a difference in rating classes between coupes and sedans. In the same way that having a backseat vs. not having one can change premiums. At least that's what an auto dealer told me once to explain the crappy tiny back seats in some sports cars.

I think I am paying around $2000 every 6 months under my dad's insurance. I asked about CLS, it would be 800 more every 6 months for me at least. I am 21 and had 2 accidents, sued by 3 person and they all won. Thats why I cant have my own insurance or a cls

Actually both accidents wasn't my fault, the only reason they won the case is caused i hit them from behind, first accident: some dumbass stoped all of a sudden in the middle of the highway down a hill, the highway goes up to a hill then down, when u r driving up, u cant see whats going on in front after the tip of hte hill. The lady in front of me got on to the tip and saw the stoped car so she braked short and i did too, thats why i hit her, she even said it wasnt my fault. There was cars in both lanes next to me so i couldnt switch lanes to avoid this, and i was only going 60mph with about 3 car spaces between me and her.

When I got my CLS in June 2000, GEICO thought I have the CL-P and quoted me $1050/year when I got my VIN they they knew that I have a CL-S and since then I am paying $1300/year ($110/month). SO, that is 25% more.

There is a difference in insurance rates between 2 doors and 4 doors. Even with Civics, the coupes have higher rates.

anytime you hit someone from behind, it IS your fault because you were "following at an unsafe distance."

you can't argue that you were at a safe distance, because you hit the other person...even if the person you hit says it wasn't your fault.

the ONLY exception to this is on free-way on-ramps and then again that varies by state to state and would be difficult to prove.

I agree, thats why i lost the case. I was just saying that the accident wasnt cause of my bad driving. I was at least 3 car spaces behind her which you rarely see around here, usually peopel will cut in if theres more than 1-2 car spaces between.

that's the problem anymore.

if you go by the book and give them like 1 car length for every 10mph (or something like that), you'd be at 6 carlengths at 60mph, and at that length everyone is cutting in front of you, so if you want to stay with the rule, you'll eventually be moving backwards.

Just another data point.. We own a '99 TL and a '01 CL-S, the insurance rates are very close, certainly not off by 50%.

In the beginning Farmers insurance charged $888 for the CLP
and double that for the S...
This is in the name of an experienced driver.

However, other insurance carriers do not differentiate between the two models and thus rates are the same
