Check out the new guy!

I bought my CLS a month ago and have been obsessively reading these discussions for a week now. Now that I feel I know enough, here I am to start asking some questions and talk to you guys. A few things...

1) This is how I broke my car in and would like to know what you all think...

For the first 1000 miles, drove and varying speeds and didn't exceed 4500 rpm's. After 1000, did about 1500 highway and 700 city mixed. At 3200, had the oil changed and MObil 1 put in. I am now driving hard, ie hitting VTEC 10 times + a day and am going to change again with Mobil 1 at 4000 miles (to get remaining conventional break in oil out). My question is do you think I should flush out the engine to ensure all conventional is gone? Or will these 2 quick changes do the trick? I want this car to last 8-10 years and I do plan to drive it hard (high RPM's, but no torque braking). I believe in Mobil 1 and would really like to hear from anyone who has made the switch and how they did it and if they feel my way was alright. Did I do it too soon or too late?

2) What is the cheapest way to get my car under 6 seconds 0-60? I was thinking CAI, pulleys and cam gears. Any ideas or expertise here I will love to hear!

3) Gasoline... I have heard amoco ultimate is the only gas that is true 93 octane all the time. I have also heard that Mobil super+ is actually 94 (from a purchaser for Mobil) and they say its 93 for legal reasons. What do you guys use and why? Mileage better with any? I know that all gas is the same and then additives mak the difference.

4) Mods for fuel economy? I think CAI is the best here. Any suggestions? I'd like 35 mpg highway if possible I geta bout 31-32 now stock going 75-80.

5) Who has beat an S4 and with what mods.

6) do Comptech springs have ANY negative effects on the rest fot he car. I have heard they can affect VSA performance, the sensors or something and that they can decrease shock life. I just want to do the springs for now.

Thanks so much. I truly look forward to any of your responses!!

Welcome to the club

1. Break-in sounds good. Alot better than I did

2. VTEC 10x a day is alot. You will need to do oil changes every 3k and change your tranny fluid every 10k miles if you want your car to last 8+ years without major problems down the road.

2. Under 6 seconds? hehe it isn't going to be CHEAP. CAI, HEADERS, pullies, Racing wheels and good tires. You might want to remove all extra weight....e.g., spoiler, back seats.

3. everybody has a different opinion. See what works for you. That 1 octane difference isn't going to make your car that much better.

4. CAI(custom or AEM) /Headers

5. Not sure how many people have beat S4 with mods. It's a close match. Forget S4's with mod chips.

6. you should do springs/shocks in tandem. comptech springs and koni shocks or something. It has to do with the size of the spring and the size of the shock. They are too close together and the shock ends up getting used too much and thus wears out faster. Somebody else will respond about the VSA.....

When I talked to my acura dealer, they said don't change to mobil 1 until 7500. and if you do change stick w/ mobil 1 for the rest of the car's life. Which im doing.

to lower 0-60 times i would suggest something that would help low end torque, and acceleration like, cai, pulley , tires and light weight rims. headers do help but only in high rpm , and in a type S your not really going to hit the high, point of the rpm where the headers kick in like in 2nd gear.

I only use mobil 1 and not a single drop of anything else. 93.

Mods for fuel econcomy would be, don't drive hard, and get a CAI.

Never beat a s4.

springs do help handling but also make the ride a little more stiff, more bumpier on highway and speed bumb. may be 10% more stiff.

oh, and after springs you can feel more traction from the stock tires so i think it actually helps the vsa. since it doesn't go off as much.

Zapata.. That was a great response, thanks so much for your effort/time!! I believe VTEC kicks in on our cars at 4800, but have heard it is 5500. From my experience it's been around 4800-5000. Can anybody confirm this? So, how often do you guys venture above 5000rpm's per day. I have just begun to and may be getting a little too in to it, haha.

He didnt say change the stick. He said if you change to mobil 1, stick with that for the rest of the cars life. Meaning he only will use mobil 1 from now on. Gtech is an elctronic black box that you put in your can and can supposably tell you your 0-60, 1/4, and HP. It's about 100 bucks. But i think on tirerack.com or some tire shop if you buy 4 of their certain tires you get a free gtech. You might want to look into that since you will want new tires.

1) Not bad. I put Mobil 1 in at 7500 miles and change it every 5k for now. Also use the Mobil 1 filter.

2) No cheap way to do it. You'll probably need everything available: headers, CAI, light rims, good tires, pulleys.

3) Usually use Texaco 92 octane. Nothing higher available here.

4) Headers and CAI. This should get you 1-2 mpg better than stock if you can keep your foot out of it. If you can't, count on 1-2mpg less than stock.

5) Screw the mods, just find a bad driver!

6) Not heard of any problems. They'll probably wear your shocks out more quickly. Get the sways too. You'll LOVE them. Trust me.

thanks for the clarificaion KC, I def. didn't have my wheaties this morning and Goldtypes, i appreciate your input. Have any of you guys feared voiding warranty with any of yor mods esp, CAI? also, the mechanics have told me to stick with HOnda oil filter b/c the washer is more like an O-ring and not a flat washer like aftermarket filters. Any comments...?

i use honda filters & mobile 1 synthetic as well. also, if you are looking to upgrade right away, we sometimes setup group buys on products to get a lower price. Right now I setup a group buy for koni yellow adjustable shocks. I'm just setting it up, not making any money, I just wanted some and didn't want to pay over $600 for them, so I got them for $500 if we get a big enough gruop. Let me know if you are interested. Somebody above said to do them at the same time as springs, that is correct, eventually the stock shocks will blow out due to the aftermarket springs.

I believe that OEM is set at 5200 or something. If you get the V-AFC(vtec controller), you can change when you want it to start.

Above, 5k......not too often because it really kills fuel economy. Some days I leave work and just want fly and so i drop into SS and have fun the entire way home Pulling on people going up a ramp is fun.....watching their reaction is even better hehe :p
