The IK22s are 3 steps colder than the stock plugs. I'd go with IK20s if you aren't boosted.

I agree with MrSteve. I purchased a set of Denso IK20 off ebay a couple of weeks ago for about $45 for my N/A '02 TL-S.

I change my plugs every 20k miles which is probably a little too ofter. But I like tinkering so it gives me something to do.

The IK22's are equivalent to the NGKBCPR7ES-11... or '7' in the heat-range. Stockers are 5's. So, they are two steps colder.

Correct DENSO Iridium:
IK16........IK20..........IK22........IK24

Thus IK22 two steps colder.

any thoughts on which plugs i should run?

99.5% of the time my car runs n/a, the other .5% w/ nitrous. should i still run colder range plugs?

my car has been running pretty rough on startup lately and i think it's time to get rid of the zex plugs and go w/ some iridiums.

take off your intake manafold and clean it out along with the EGR port with some carb cleaner - that solved the rough idle in my car 100%. My EGR port was nearly all the way clogged up with carbon

Run the IK20s or IK22s.

Remember, 90% of the time with the SC the bypass valve is open so we aren't seeing boost and I never once had a start up issue with the SC'ed car while using the IK22s. (With the UniChip I did though).

Maybe this was answered already but would would it be safe (and effective) to install the IK20's in a n/a type-s straight out of the box or should they be gapped?

Out of the box should be fine as they are pre-gapped to 1.1mm

they are 100k plugs, but it is easy and cheep to replace them with new fresh ones, so most people do them way before then. I did mine at 70k and they really looked like they could go another 100k - but I replaced them anyway (its called obsession)

sorry to butt in on a 2nd gen topic, but what would guys suggest for a n/a 1st gen 2.2, IK16's or IK20's? or is it even worth it to spend this much on plugs?

All J-series motors are V6's, so you would need 6 plugs.

you could, they are platinum and are more expensive than the Iridium ones that cost half as much as stock on Ebay and are better than stock.

ou sig - I appreciate the clarification!

Would it be a simple replacement for a non-mechanically inclined person? Or, better to just have a "professional" slip them in?

pretty much everything that gets talked about on here (other than installing the crank pulley or supercharger) can be done by anyone with some time and some simple tools. There are instructions on this site - just do a search
