car being built in july, 2002 - should be clear of transmission problems?
Greetings,
After a lot of test drives (Acura CL Type S 6-Speed, Lexus IS300, Infiniti G35, Cadillac CTS, Saab 9-3, Volvo S60 T-5, Audi A4 1.8T and 3.0) and research (JD Powers, Car&Driver, Edmunds, Consumer Reports), I've decided on the CL.
A search of your past postings indicates that some (operative word: some) CL's have had transmission problems ; after going to three Acura dealers in my local area (this ain't the easiest car to find), I talked to the fleet manager at Cerritos (CA) Acura - he told me that he had a silver CL-Type S 6-Speed that would be completed on 25 July 2002 and delivered to California about the first or second week of August.
I went ahead and put a refundable deposit on the car; since this car is still being built, I would think it shouldn't be subject to the past transmission problems?
Also, a search of your postings had different thoughts about the first oil change (I check the oil on my little ol' 1996 Camry just about every time I get gas, and I keep spare oil in the trunk, just in case!)- I was thinking of changing the oil at 500 or 1000 miles; but I think there's something called "break-in" oil?
Thanks for all the great information; I've had "Mom-mobiles" all my life; now that I'm (according to my kids), "old" (44) - Mom wants something nice!
Peace!

Hey Ma!
Good luck on the purchase. The automatic tranny is the only one to have problems thus far. The 6 speed is still rather young, but no one has had any problems with it so you should be in the clear.

Holy crap...If my mom even KNEW how to drive stick...much less research and buy a CL-S 6 speed.
I have to give you props.
CL-S is a great car. But I'd wait for the G35 coupe.

They claim to know how to drive a manual tranny. If it is not driver error, then maybe the CL transaxle has weak/defective synchros.
