Without a supercharger or turbo, forget it. Cobras are RWD and have manual trannys, not to mention that they are lighter too!

cl-s vs. cobra = no chance in hell, even with mods. cl-s vs. gt mustang = close race, cl-s will win with minor mods. i have friends with both cobra's and gt's and we've lined em up a few times. if you want to take a cobra out in a cl-s, find a way to integrate the nsx 6-speed in your car, oh, and get a turbo.

at houston raceway park back in january, I ran 14.8s and my buddy in his '98 cobra (no mods) ran 13.6s and 13.7s pretty easily. that's a lot of ground to make up with headers, etc.
on one run he screwed up the launch and I got a couple car lengths lead on him, but by the time we hit the lights, he was half a car up on me. granted, I only ran a 15.1 that run, but those cobras have decent amount of motor in stock form.

The Cobra will win...and hey let it win...who cares...the fact that it is relatively fast doesn't change the fact that it is a crass plastic Ford driven by some scumbag with no class and no taste in cars. I hate Mustangs, just in case you couldn't figure it out.

It all depends on what year cobra you are trying to race. The old cobra's (93-98) are not that fast. CL Type-S's should at least hang with those year mustangs. Consider me an unconcerned observer since I have a 98 Camaro Z28. My good friend has a CL-S, and I am very impressed. They are much nicer cars than mine, but they are not drag racers. I do have to say that they will beat most 93-98 GT's and hang with those same year cobras.

As a former 99 Cobra owner......no way dude. My Cobra wasn't a rocket but I had a good second on my CL-S in the 0-60 department.
However it had to be running to do this!

I would have to agree with Nova....When I'm at 80 cruising on the hwy and need to get around someone...If I punch it the car still pulls...not as hard as take-off but not nowhere near hitting a wall...I think Stoned must ended up with the slow batch

Stick with the Ford Aerostar. Chances are you'll beat that without having to rev over 3k RPMs. That way you'll have the satisfaction of winning a race and conserving gas milage. Don't mess with the Plymoth Voyager though...those things are mean.

Come on now guys. We do have nice cars, but the type S is in no way a speed demon. A Cobra would kill our car. The 96-99 GT we have a chance (depending upon how you drive). The Camaro don't even think about it. As for the type R and old M3, it's very close. I had an encounter with both of them this past weekend. It was hard to tell who had the upper hand.
PS. Got to love that revlimiter. It's saved me a few times allready.

Lets see... 3.2 liters versus 5... Never in a million years. Even with a CAI and headers the Cobra will laugh at you. Even in the curve you'll get your butt handed to you.

I don't think Ford is THAT bad. I feel they are the best of the domestics. The Cobra is tough to beat. It can compete with the Corvette. Also, its a totally different class than the CL.

2001 Ford SVT Cobra has 320 hp, 317 ftlbs of torque.. 3430 lbs.. so about 100 lbs. lighter than our car .. fastest times for stock are 4.5 in 0-60 and 13.00 secs in 1/4 mile( C&D 2/01)with a 5.4L V8 and 6 speed.. way faster than our cars but then again different class of cars.. better compare would be a Cobra vs. a Vette

I'm not so sure about 4.5/13.0. I have raced a SVT Cobra 2000 and he only had me by half a car by 100. Of course, that was back when I was stock. I talked to the guy and he said he was running high 13's in the 1/4.

stock 2001 svt cobra is 320hp/317ftlbs from a 4.6l dohc v8 with a 5 speed tranny. those performance figures sound suspiciously like the cobra r and/or competition as well.
I think the regular svt just nips 5 secs 0-60 and runs mid 13s in the 440 yard dash.

FORD had a recall on the Mustang Cobra.
A change in the intake manifold (if I remember right) was causing it to produce some 20-30 less HP than advertised. So a lot of Cobras are still on the road with sub 300 hp.

Okay then it was the 2001 model. All I know is that it was the latest model, and that it was bone stock. I don't really care much for Ford's anyway. So when's the next Houston meet?
