Bye CL-S; Hello RX-8!

Well, I went and did it. I decided to change to the RX-8 instead of the CL-S. So far, I love it. Very well connected to the road; a civilized S2000. I haven't gotten into the gas too heavily yet since it is new. Took it up to the N. Ga mountains on Sunday and went thru the twisties. Simply put, awesome.

I got the 6-Speed with Grand Touring Package, 6 Disc Changer, Appearance Package. Dealer had $995 worth of "Paint Sealer" , and a $2K markup on the window, plus some other junk. I told him that I would buy the car for $500 under MSRP and 14K for my trade. He countered for $200 under MSRP and 14K for the trade. So we went $250 under MSRP and 14K for my trade finally.

I got it in Red. The paint is metalflake, and looks very sharp. I hope you guys will still let me hang out here even though I jumped ship on cars.

dont know if you knew this or not but mazda is in a heap of shit again for this car. same fiasco as the miata HP overrating a few years back. mazda has officially lowered the HP rating to 238 RX-8 for the manual and 197 for the auto RX-8. they are apparently offering free maintainance for the duration of the standard warranty and a 500 dollar debit card to compensate pissed off customers. this applies if you bought your RX-8 before Aug. 26th.

you heard it here first....

here is a link and yes you need to register to read it, sorry.

here is a link to more info

"This just in:

Just got a phone call from budaman, who had just got off a conference call with MNAO. Apparently they are revising the RX-8 horsepower figures: the Manual is being revised down 3.6% to 238hp, and the Auto down 4.5% to 197hp.

Anyone who has already purchased an RX-8 will be receiving a letter from Mazda offering two alternatives:

Mazda will buy back the car. (He didn't have the full details - they'll be in the letter.)

Mazda will provide free scheduled servicing for the duration of the standard warranty plus a $500 debit card.

Basically the same deal that they offered after the 2001 Miata was found to be down on power too. Owners will have 30 days to decide."

you are still welcomed. I love the looks and handling. I went to the dealer and he gave me the keys to a red 6 speed and the car felt so slow. I beat the hell out of it and it was quick once moving, but not fast at all. It just doesnt have the everyday driveability that a Type S has. this is my opinion though. Good Luck with the car.

haha just be careful when posting much of anything about your car...people get really defensive around here sometimes. Congrats on the car. That's a sweet ride. I love the interior on the rx8...definitely beats the Z in that category but hey wattya gonna do . As for the HP shit that was posted, big deal, the performance numbers i've seen the car tested at are what really counts and it's a real top notch performer.

Thanx Guys. The dealer disclosed the HP thing to me, and I was OK with it. I qualify for the free Maintenance thing and the $500 since I purchased before 8/26. I laughed and told them to please also tell my insurance co that the HP is not quite 250! It'll take some getting used to the different feel, but so far it is good.

I'll post some Pics asap. I have to go out of town this week, so it'll be a bit before I can do it.

Technically, Mazda refers to their "metalflake" as MICA, which is only available in the Velocity Red and the Nordic Green - the latter I have yet to see and none of my local dealers with one or more in their inventory have yet to receive this particular color. Test drove one last week, and the car is pretty happy if you keep the revs up - the torque (once it kicks in) is linear, as was my old RX-4, but you have to wait for the revs to catch up for the car to respond. Interior was much better than the 350Z, and much sportier in nature than the G35c I drove a week earlier. Surprisingly, there was more headroom in the RX-8 than in either the G35c or my CL-S, but the leg room was a bit lacking - the steering wheel could get in the way during agressive driving, but didn't really notice it during my time behind the wheel. Guy at the dealer offered me my choice of either the Winning Blue or Lightening Yellow they had on their lot (both had Nav and the G/T package) without charging me for the Nav (since I really don't like/want/need Nav) ... a $2000 option ... but basically I couldn't get past the lack of useable range the car offers (24 mpg highway/15.9 gallon tank). Overall, a very nice ride, and it gives hope that if this is successful, Mazda will come out with the re-introduced RX-7 for '06 (fall '05 delievery possible). Enjoy the ride, and keep us posted.

I just came from short test drive a Red RX-8 6speed, GT package.. The RX-8 has enough torque, you can spin the tires of the the stoplight with just 25% throtlle. At 100 MPH in 5th, it was bit noisy.. At high rev, The Ren Engine sound like a drill... I opened the hood, the exhaust was louder than the engine!!

From 65 to 100 it just keep pulling in 5th!... straight to the redline!

Later, I will post a short review of test drive.

Do not like:
1) The de-rating to 238 HP instead of 250HP, how about 300HP Special edition?
2) No memory seats, mirros are not linked either.
3) Bit Noisy at 100+ MPH
4) The exhaust is loud at idle.

What I Like:
1) it hugs the corners!
2) The engine sound like a hi-speed drill
3) Linear acceleration
4) Spin the tires at will!
5) Excellent short throw gear box, gears are too close!! Clutch is linear and does not snap on you!

Nashua.

Nashua.. How are you able to spin the tires at will? It must have some crappy tires, as I can barely get my Z to spin out unless I drop the clutch and the Z has significantly more torque than the RX8

Other negative of the RX8 is the horrible gas mileage. One of the reasons why I'd never get a rotary engine.

I do like the interior of that car though

Also as a note, on the RX-8 messageboard, only 1 or 2 people have gone below 15's in the 1/4. Mazda/Ford seem to have this HP problem over and over again. Will they ever learn?

daddy,

I just droped the clutch at the stop light and the tires barked at me, I shift hard to second, 20 feet away, and the tires barked too. It had Potenza RE040 tires I think.

Now, I am learning that the RX-9 is 6-speed is dynoing a t only 185 WHP which makes the engine output clost to 220-225 HP... Thiis a mess for Mazda. The are claiming 238 HP within +-5% off and offered the buyback/$500 rebate to save their asses from another Class action Law suit.

Gotcha. It does the same thing with my Z. It just doesn't like to spin out without dropping the clutch a little. Same tires as the Z too.

I agree about the HP thing. Mazda/Ford don't have a good history around this: Mazda Miata, Mazda 6 and 99 Mustang Cobra all had HP issues
