Buying a CL-S 2003 tomorrow

my mechanic ....who has been with acura since only honda existed.
He mentioned how the TL/CL transmissions he fixed without the jet kit were lasting 200-300K. which got me thinking a lot.
he showed me with the transmission apart how the jet kit literally just drips the oil down the physical gear/shaft itself since without a cooler it gets WELLLL over 200degrees.. so the jet kit was installed to prevent sudden CATASTROPHIC failure of second gear. which is how people were locking up their trannies on the highway.. it would literally shear apart and jam everything up.
that was more important for acura to address than longevity of the entire transmission. so they installed that jet kit thus taking away flow from the rest of the transmission and what do you know... everyone has 3rd gear issues now..
WHATA coincidence.. so
with a cooler...that'll solve the 2nd gear blowing up issue, and with more flow going to 3rd gear and cooler oil by 100degress...
I see no reason why this trans won't last a while!
call me optimistic... but I got over 100 different parts in this transmission compared to last, along with jet kit delete and cooler from day one. I got a good feeling bout this.

Is this the same mechanic who fixed your car last time? Did he give you all this info back then, or is just now presenting it to you?

That's what i was getting at. Sounds like he really screwed you by not taking that jet kit out in the first place. I don't think I would let him touch my car anymore. Besides I doubt he really knows better then the Acura engineers.

as for the jet kit he never went one way or the other.. he just put the transmissions back together.. some had the jet kit others did not. looking back however he noticed the ones without the jet kit didn't have 3rd gear issues.. so after finding my 3rd gear roasted he put 2 and 2 together and reccommended me to remove it...which i did.
he didn't think 3rd would be so proned to failure with only 30more whp, but he was wrong. His initial thought was 2nd would go from the harsh engagements with more power but apparently it was in decent shape, and third was the real problem.
You guys seem to think people are supposed to be perfect... well they are HUMAN, so you gotta cut some slack every now and then. yes we both learned at my expense but that's life.
think what you guys want it's ok.
my car is the only modded cl he has worked on so even he is still learning what happens to these trannies under certain conditions.
this rebuild cost me 1000 for labour and 500 for rebuild kit (plus shipping) and 150 for new clutch piston and filter.
that's dirt cheap all things considered.
FYI if you add up both rebuilds 1st(1960) 2nd(1750) it's still cheaper than if i went to acura once AND I got loads of knowledge off this fiasco along with super high quality internals!!!! so maybe you need to go back to math class?
Oh and I FINALLY goosed it. and OMFG 1st to 2nd is MENTAL... tq steer city!!! it's a whole new animal. you have NO idea what you all are missing. :-) Literally it's like having standard when you WOT it.
SO HAPPY I GOT THE ALTO CLUTCHES
the OEM clutches shift like jello in comparison. these ones mean business. I cannot wait to race someone..
PS..
HONDA HAS NEW ATF FULLY SYNTHETIC BRAND NEW STUFF

Well I was trying to say if he knew that it was better to remove the jet kit before, when he previously worked on your transmission, why didn't he bring it up then?
It's just that this whole story if full of holes and it's hard to not take what he's saying with a grain of salt, is all I'm saying.
and I think that new Honda ATF is mostly intended for newer transmissions. It supposedly isn't so good for high temperatures.
