Break-In Question
Allright got my car form Scottsdale Acura Monday had and so far have driven 270 miles. For the first 250 miles I have been varying the RPM's. Haven't gone above 5500 RPM's yet. Have been accl to about 4000 off the line every 5 times. I'm out in Arizona now and crusing speed on the Highway is 80-85 MPH which I'm wondering is that bad for the car. I have taken it to 120 just for a short race had to show this dick in an IS that he couldn't win (In racing stories) But have I done anything bad for break-in. Is there anything else I should do let me know. Thanks, Anthony

I know a lot of people are going to say that you shouldn't drive above 55-60 during the break-in period. While that might have been true with older cars (maybe even some newer cars) I think it's unneccessary for the CL. Why you may ask? It all has to do with the RPMs. Can anyone tell me what concern there is with driving over 55-60MPH other than a concern for RPMs? The gearing on the CL keeps the RPMs relatively low all the way up to 80-85 maybe even a little above that. I believe around 80MPH the RPMs are right around 2100 or so. That's extremely low and I can't imagine what harm you are going to do to the engine during the break-in period doing 80MPH with the RPMs only being in the low 2000s. (Keep in mind that with a new car you are breaking in the tires as well which is a reason to not drive too fast (above 55-60) for around 100-200 miles)
So, my opinion is you can drive above 55-60 (up to around 80-85) without worry after the initial 100-200 miles after the "tire" break-in. Just don't WOT (wide-open throttle) the car or get the RPMs too high. (like 6000)
BTW, correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the owners manual says anything about a top speed during break-in.
I'll be curious to see other people's input on this.
In fact, to better explain what I'm saying and to see how I would break-in a car read below...
-First 100-200 miles: Regulate the RPMs and don't drive above 55-60MPH. Don't WOT the car or get the RPMs much above 4000.
-From 200-600 miles: Regulate the RPMs and drive at a speed which keeps the RPMs relatively low (low 2000s or lower) which equates to around 80-85MPH.
-From 600 miles until the first few thousand miles: I would still baby the car a little but don't be afraid to get the RPMs high every once in a while and maybe a few WOTs.
