Beaten by a GTP

I roll up to a stop light on the way to lunch and pull up next to a GTP. I look over and the guy is geeky looking and talking on his phone so I don't think I'm going to get in a race. The cross traffic stops and I roll forward a bit and take off kind of fast. He matches my speed (~15mph) and I nail it. Takes a second to down shift to first and we're off. I shut it down at 70 and I'm at his rear bumper w/him pulling on me.

hmm...we've never know. but probably not. they're torquey to begin with and adding some mods...
i might have beaten him if he spun his tires too much. temps were in the high 60s, 1/2 a tank of gas, spare, vsa off. i should have done the 1->2->d3 cuz my times at the track prove that i'm faster that way.

i'll bet $50 that this guy wasn't stock. you can spend less than $1k and get them into the 13s easily.

The current Grand Prix has either a 3.1 liter (cough), 3.8 liter or a Eaton Supercharger equiped 3.8 liter, both later engines are designated the 3800 Series II.

The GTP only get's the 3.8L SC'd engine, hardly the smaller of the group and obviously gets the largest (equal in CI but larger in HP and torque) engine.

nice death, at least you didnt loose to a civic

So far GTP's modified or stock havent given me any challenge (knock on wood). Some of these cars can be very quick from a rolling start, especially with the low end torque those blowers produce. Try running him from 90mph - 120mph. I doubt he will be pulling much.

I ran against one GTP, not sure what his mods were, just saw exhaust. I pulled from him pretty bad on the highway, it almost seemed like he wasnt trying, until he did a ricer fly-by.

Well, not too easily. The car can do it but the driver needs to learn how to launch. Once you drop the pulley down to 3.5 or less inches with the needed intake and exhaust it becomes difficult to launch the car well. Being FWD and now having 330+ lb/ft torque the tires will break loose at command.

I installed an ERL H20 injection system on the car after putting on a 3.2" pulley and it was sure fun to drive. Loads of low end but it would break loose at 1/3 throttle if the pavement wasn't decent.

Lock the e-brake and you could nearly sit in place with the smoke billowing, not good for tires though.

Interesting you mention this...

I was heading back from Nashville a few years ago and a silver S4 jumped on the highway just south of Murfeesboro. I was already traveling along at about 75 and this guy darted out from the on-ramp in a hurry. Seeing this I expect a quick run.

Just south of 231 it opens as usual, so I get on it as he tries to pass. Keep in mind the GTP is a 4 speed auto with 2nd taking you up to 90+ (depending on PCM mods). From 80 to about 120 (where I shut it down) I pulled on the S4 handily

Now I wan't stock by any measure and he may of been. But even with mods an S4 would still be the same if not less HP and less torque as a GTP with more weight. Gearing is much better in the S4 though.

yeah we do.... go to www.clubgp.com

you troll and I will personally track you down and....

I'm vampyre on there as well...

As for GTP's see my sig below. My mods are in the link in the sig. I'd say about 1K in mods, but my chrome rims slowed me down. Similar mods easily run from 13.5 to 13.8.

As some have said a bitch to launch, and a retarded, parapalegic turtle if you don't catch a down shift out of second from a roll.... second is a dog for acceleration. 3rd is actually better, and first is a killer due to the high torque (see my dyno numbers as well)

Sold mine since I didn't need two cars and Acura had smaller payments (larger downpayment) and it's a car I won't mod as it's both my wife's and mine. That way no warranty worries if something goes wrong. My GTX would've been a nightmare for warranty repairs if I would've needed them..

Plus I sold it for 85% of cost, not bad for about 18 months and 24K miles on it.

Hello and let me introduce myself. I have a GTP, and Iam from L.A. County too, Ill be at California Speedway on Jan 13,2002. care too have a friendly match?

Nice too see you guys not slam the (GTP) too much, like most of yous ,Iam a car fanatic. I like all makes except the ones that go over the limt with stickers, big wings , and irritating exhaust.

This seems like a civilized message board , btw our cras do make a lot of TRQ on the low end, but there many ways to improve the TOP END now..ie.. headers, downpipe, rockers, and what not.. maybe ill see one off you S.cali Acura Cl / S4 owners out at CSW.

Nice to meet everyone.

Hey man, welcome. Most of us know the modded GTP can beat a type-s, just dont worry about those who disagree, or those whoe confuse it with a GT.

Got any pics of your car?

How crowded is Cali Speedway? Someone told me a couple of bad things about it. Care to share your experiences there?

"Mike" i went to California Speedway when it first opened up, the track was new and slick...bad 60FT..2.4-2.5 , but i still managed a 14.5@96.XXmph, this was done with 3 modds only (k&n filter,3"exhaust, and 3.4 pulley)

Since then i have moddified the car whole lot more, i like the track better than Carlsbad, only cause you can drive to it not 4x4 into the track. Set backs are just thats its higher elevation(2000 soemthing), and the track hasnt dialed in yet.

I whish they would bring back POMONA, that track was the best, 60FT times wise and trap Speeds

As for pics i can get some later,.......

Timeslips ill post after the CSW runs.

i got a coupel of more modds(TB heat shield, heeader wrap, and ported manifolds) that i plan on getting right before i go to the track so will see how the track responds this year to the notorious 60FT,s.

heres my modds

1st off thanks for ignoring Outrageous CLS

Sounds like you have a solid 13 second car on your hands. Carlsbad is a pain but it's only ~1/2 hour away so that's extremely convenient. I may head up there on 1/12/02 if you're interested.

Quite reading the magazine Stats there bad for your health, our cars are high 14.s stock 1/4 milers Some are very rare , and hit low low 14.s in stock forms.

Iam pretty sure you can could find a GTP owner in your area that be more than glad to give you a better run than what you have experinced.Stock for Stock.which Tracks do you race at?

I seen a few GTPs at the track, and i know for a fact they can run high 14s stock. Also mid 14s with no problems with mods.

Obviously you dont know much...13,s are easy, and 12,s well its getting there..... all with some good tunning

BTW i like mustangs and all the other cars you speak about too..they are great

I got some thing for you too watch..turn your speakers up and here the whine or if not go to your local track and call out the next GTP you see it out there. This run was made at Irwindale 1/8th of a mile .I won ,this is one of the best Mustang ever to give me a good run, wish this would have been the 1/4 mile track but oh well(woudl have like to see the outcome then), he claimed he was stock but that wasnt too belivable.

Some people are clueless. Although I did trade in my '97 GTP on the '01 CL-S, I did so for reasons other than performance. The GTP is a strong passenger vehicle.

Wife only 2k miles on the GTP I was running consistant 14.8's with a best of 14.78@94.xx on a stock vehicle. With the addition of just an open cone intake (still being sold on the GP Store) and custom 3 Chamber Flowmaster exhaust (of course with the U-Bend removed) the time dropped to 14.4's with a best of 14.41@97.xx.

Later came the first SC nosedrive from Magnuson with a keyed shaft and time were into the 13's.

I loved messing with that vehicle. I even ran 40 lb injector with the use of an ARC2 along with an ERL Aquamist H20 System and a 3.0" pulley. Quite fun but nearly too much torque for a FWD vehicle.

Steve, did you make it to the track in this configuration? If not, what would you guess your ETs and traps to have been?

Never made it like this. I doubt the times would have been much better than others with well tuned vehicles running larger pulleys. Torque was up but I feel that it lost in the higher revs. It was past the efficiency area for the M90 blower and the H20 was just there to keep deto in check.

Eventually (fairly quickly) the jets for the H20 system got clogged which required me to run more fuel up in the revs to tame deto. Runnig this rich also hurt power but did manage to allow 15+ PSI boost with 0 KR during the summer, in other words: tons of torque.

If more time was taken to tune everything correctly it may have turned out well. But when the jets became clogged I got lazy and instead of pulling the blower to clean them I just went the fuel route.

No 13's or 12's? Uhhh....let's see... I'd say the GP boards have almost a dozen + GTP's running anywhere from mid to high 12's (some should be hitting low 12's by spring and maybe an 11 or two by summer) and dozens and dozens of them in the 13's. (and this is only the boards, I bet there are about the same number running these times that DON'T go on the internet for car message boards.

Show me one CL-S without nitrous running 13's consistently and easily? All it takes on a GTP is a $70 pulley, $200 CAI, and $600 cat back exhaust. (plus a good driver) and people can pull 13.8-9 with that alone. Maybe when the 6-speed is out, 13's in the CL-S will be easier, but for now, sorry. Don't think so.
-
Sorry, but do a search on GTP posts in this forum and you'll see that your attitude about GTP's is outnumbered by... oh ...say..... 2000 to 1?

I only sold my GTX because of I needed the extra cash monthly for other payments. I really miss that car and would honestly prefer the GTX over the CL-S for the whole driving feeling. Nothing beats the Torque and sound of that engine. That was a FUN car to drive.

Wow.... what a comparison. I hear plenty of people say the inside of the CL-S looks a lot like an accord or even civic. Does that mean it's cheap too? Sorry, but the seats in the GTP were very comfortable. (I had a 99 cavalier and no comparison)

You have a LOT of support in your arguments. Very detailed and well thought out! You must win all the debates and discussions you ahve in school huh?

And don't even bother saying american cars are cheap. 75% of the Cl-S is made using U.S.A parts (25% is from Japan) and the car is assembled in the US in good old Ohio. Must mean the CL-S is crap to then. Sorry, your arguments are just pointless and obviously show your lack of a true car enthusiast attitude. Your like the typical ricer mentality over at ClubSI stating "MY car is the BEST and all other cars are crap. EVEN IF I'm wrong in my assumptions and comments!"

American Cars suck, except for viper, corvette impala, and mustangs.
Impala? Dude, why do you wanna be the disgrace of our forum? It's obvious to us you don't know shit, and your gay ass comments aren't wanted here. So STFU.

And Vampyre, bite your tounge. Only a fucking idiot or a jealous pontiac owner would compare cl-s interior w/ accord or civic. I agree with you wanting to flame OUTRAGEOUS dumbass, but don't make yourself look silly in the process.

Actually, no that was a comment from someone that owned an Accord, saying how similar the buttons, dials, etc are to his accord. And if you do look, they are quite similar. I wasn't referring to the whole interior. I only mentioned that to say that people can compare our car to lower level cars as well. Not necessarily meaning they are correct. I should have made it clearer what I was referring to in particular.

As for the Impala comment. That's funny, since the Impala is a W-Body and has a 3.8L engine in it. Guess what, the GTP is a W-Body with a 3.8L Supercharged engine in it. Therefore, you now just stated that the Grand Prix is a good car since you claim it's weaker Chevy counterpart is an good car.

If you going to want to troll and piss people off, make sure you make sense and don't make stuff up. Why do you have such an anger against Grand Prixs? Had a bad experience with one? If you were a true car enthusiast you would appreciate the Grand Prixs for what they are. Very quick cars for their size with a LOT of modification (both handling and straightline) capabilities.
