bad 1/4 mile HELP

I have a 2003 CL-S 6MT

I have never tracked before, and it was a blast, if you have a chance do it....

well while it was fun, I have surprisingly bad times... I was expecting to be 15 flat... (btw Im completely stock down to the tires)

maybe my expectations were to high, anyway here are my numbers...

(second run my opponent was disqualified, and I mis-shifted and shut her down definitely burnt a lot of clutch in the proces though)

1st run 2nd run 3rd run 4th run
r/t .563 .273 .269 .547
60' 2.553 2.475 2.664 2.539
330' 6.804 6.582 7.034 6.655
1/8 10.278 10.390 10.552 10.011
mph 71.77 58.9 71.2 73.82
1000 13.188 14.323 13.473 12.882
1/4 15.680 18.082 15.9 15.349
mph 90.26 60.61 90.76 91.17

so second run will cost me 30k miles on my clutch but other than that, shouldnt I be at 15s easy? taking her in for the 60k check up this week... who knows, please leave your thoughts...

check your butterfly valve......if it's not working, you lose about 20hp in the mid to high end range....read up on it...

I'm pretty sure everyone will tell you to improve on your 60' time. I believe you want it around 2.2 If your butterfly valve is working (right on the manifold by the firewall), then I'm going to have to assume it was just all on the driver, not the car. What did you have your tire pressure at? I think others like it around 20-30psi. I forget....

Ask the 6speeders what they launch it at. What did you take your up to?

I took it up to redline nearly,

my tires were at about 38psi, where they are always for my street driving, and they are running low on tread (and they are the mickys that came on the car)

so you think tire preasure and launch can shave half a second???

Improving your 60', lower tire pressure, and better launch will def help. Don't the CLS trap at around 96-98?.....Just wait for Mr.Steve to respond. He'll def help you out. I never raced at the tracks, only been to watch. So you might want some advice from those that run there. Give it a day, and you'll get your answers.

Here is a link to a thread that shows what your car is capable of with the right 60' time, tire pressure, and launch....

For a first time at the track, that isn't that bad. You just need practice on launching, and shifting. On the shifting don't try to do it as fast as you can, but rather as smooth as you can. The smoother you get, the faster the shifts will come. For every 10th you take off of your 60'. you should take 2 off of the big end.

Glad you had fun, that is what it is all about.

trap speed seems pretty low for a stock CLS6 even if you are new to the track. Get your car checked out.

basically focus on your 60 foot when your starting out as a noob. And concentrate on nailing those shift points precisely and accurately. I hit a 14.8 on my Stock 03 CL-S so therse no reason you couldnt hit a 14.4ish in your 6 speed

so I'll post the whole slips later, but I went to the track last night, and on my third and final run I got my time down to 15.1, and I felt that I could have done better than that, I definitely looking for 14.8s next week

Your tire presure is just way too high. Needs to be around 25psi then you will get some traction, & decent 60' times. It takes practice. I've only been a few times to a track & I can't get a good 1/4 mile for anything. My first time with my 6 speed had around the sames times as you.

Yes they are, but they do a good job for track use suprisingly.

That's for the nomination guy!

To quote myself:

I launched at 2500rpm... let the clutch out with very little throttle input, then slowly went WOT.
That's how I achieved those 60' times.

schreiber117: Don't feel bad guy as practice makes perfect. My first time at the track, I only managed to run a 14.8 and I was nailing some high 2.4 and 2.5 60' times. But once you learn how to launch it right, you will see your E.T.'s dipping into the 14s.

The key is to look at your timeslips. Compare them, analyze why you took longer to get to I1 / I2 / I3 in the runs, look for a root cause (i.e slow shifting / too much wheelspin / bouncing off the rev limiter / etc) and try to improve on your next run.

Pump your rear tire pressure to 40psi to decrease rolling resistance and lower your front tire pressure down to 22psi to increase traction off the line.

Good luck!

Lower front tire pressure to 23-25psi. Raise rear tire pressure to 40psi.

Check IMRC for proper operation.

Practice the launch.

How did you manage to mis-shift?

What were the weather conditions?

I'd be more concerned with the trap speed than the ET. You sure you werent letting off before the end of the 1/4 mile? There are 2 lines at the end of the track, you dont want to let off before you are fully past the 2nd line.

I ran 14.5 @ 96.5mph 110% bone stock, and no the stock tires are not good for track use. Are you spinning off the line alot, or is it bogging? You need to experiment with different launch rpms & clutch modulation to nail good 60's. A 2.3 60' is pretty average for a stock 6 speed.

Really?

I'd say that for stock tires:

2.3 - good
2.2 - fluke
2.1 - impossible

I've yet to hear of anyone pull better than a 2.3 actually on stock rubber.

That's because all the people that are trying to get good times replace the tires ASAP

2.306 on stock tires gave me my 14.5 bone stock, and most of my good runs were between 2.30-2.35. If I was at a better track I think I could have gotten 2.2's with the stock tires, but I'll never find out as I'll never go back without dr's on.

Gotcha... my 2.32 60' time gave me a 14.39 run, at a shitty track too.
