Audi TT seemed slow...???

Driving home tonight there was an Audi TT convertible with Xenon headlights weaving through traffic behind me on rt93 coming out of Boston. There was room to play so before he got up to my point I zipped around the car in front of me to make my intentions known that I wanted to play too. At this point I was in the 3rd our of 4 lanes. He proceeds to go cruising by me at (I would guess) about 80-90mph so I downshift and step on it. Our car is no great thing in 4th but a little bit up the road he slowed because there was a car in the high speed lane going 60mph. So this gave me a chance to slow down and grab 3rd and zoom...as you know, our car rocks in 3rd on the highway with headers. Once we were both "Getting on it" it seemed like he was really slow. I overtook him in almost no time. I pulled ahead and switched lanes so that he could catch up at which point he just shook his head. I went anyways and he pulled behind and followed me for a bit but we weren't really racing at that point. I moved out of the way and he passed me and I followed him. I could tell (by the smell!) that he got on it once in a while but it was no issue to catch up. Maybe he was never trying? My I over estimated the TT? I always thought that the TT was quick? MAybe I was wrong. Or perhaps we are just better on the highway?

Nope, they are not fast at all... when I was shopping for Roadsters, it was on my list, and to my suprise, even with all wheel drive, it has a bit of oversteer. and it was not that fast at all. the one I drove was even the 03 version with 225HP and six speed.

Do you remember if it had single or dual exhaust? If single, it has even less HP, with a 5 speed.

Dual. That is why I expected better. But with VW...errrr...Audi it doesn't always work out that way. Isn't the 1.8T duel?

He didn't look that mad which is why I didn't know what to think but I didn't see him the first time when it seemed that he was "trying". I think the first run told him that he could only play...that is cool. I play with cars that are faster than me. On the highways there are limits and it is nice to just hang with someone that loves thier car....

I had no problem passing four TT's at the track a few days ago. Those things need some major power upgrades...which is coming this next model year I think w/ a 3.0L engine option. Yep, the current engines are 1.8T and 1.8TT.

heh, funny you should mention this, I ran a TT last night, 100ish and up... once I hit 4th, I was still pulling on him, but fuckin' barely... we shut it down at 125ish. I hate our 4th gear. :o

Audi TTs are not that swift and IN MY EXPERIENCE, these guys think they are. I got more TT kills than I can count. They are always ready to run here in Atlanta.

GREAT kill!

Nice kill.

When you see a TT your guaranteed either a cocky guy or a hot girl.

Well once we decided to just cruise in traffic he seemed alright but before that the looks that I got might have qualified him as a hot girl...errrr...I mean cocky guy.

I am not sure how much he was trying but I could tell that there was a few times that he got on it and the car couldn't do it...as Mantis said our 4th gear sux but 3rd rocks and once you grab that you 'got go'!!!!....do I sound spoiled? LOL!

I had a post a while back re: racing a TT. He jumped about 3 cars on me off of a corner turn (2 lanes turn @ same time - me on the outside) but I quickly caught up and passed him in no time. I waited for him to line up again from a 20 mph roll but he gunned it from behind and I reacted too slow so he buzzed past me. I caught up w/ him @ the next light and we chatted. His attitude was that he actually won the last "race." I just smiled and gave him the thumbs up anyway.

As far as jumping off the line/corner maybe it was a Quattro? I don't think that they are all Quattros? He was just a happy #$%^& with a T convertable that <as they all do> underestimated the CL.

IT wasn't a great win...if he fought harder I'd brag more.

the new TT is coming with a 3.2L and at least some 265-280 HP.. best of all, a real nice 2-clutch maunal tranny that engages 2 gears at the same time, 0 shifiting time!

TT's aren't super fast, and don't suffer the same AWD whp loss as other Audi's since the TT AWD is primarily a FWD. It uses a haldex center diff like volvo AWD. A friend of mine runs low 14's with a chip and exhasut. She is a good driver though. A stock TT is definitely no match for a TLS like your car Andy. A chipped one would give you a little more trouble.

Once I get my car working right we'll have to mess around. I am prolly going to run at epping this saturday for the hell of it and see if I can launch the car with this new clutch. I started overboosting lately so all my ignition timing is gone. Car still feels pretty decent tho. A few things on the house keeping list.
