Attn:Tire Guys, How much torque?

Allo

I'll be getting a set of BBS RX rims shortly and I need to know how much torque is used when tightening the tires. Out of curiousity is the torque dependant upon what type of wheel or does the torque stay the same no matter what rim is used?

Thanks much
Rob

85 ft/lbs....no more-no less.

BTW, make sure you put the Parking Brake on before torquing (teehee....that makes me laugh now that I reread it.)

Do yourself a favor and get a good torque wrench....not one of those PepBoys specials.

Not that it's a big difference but the Helm's manual say to use 79.6 lb-ft (p. 18-28). The same torque (well, 80 lb-ft) is shown for the spare tire on p. 277 of the owner's manual so it probably is the same amount of torque, regardless of rim.

Anywhere in the 70-85 Ft-lb range is usually sufficient for passenger cars (read the manual, please). Equally, and perhaps more important, is that all the lugs be tightened equally and alternately. Having individual lugs tightened to various degrees on the same wheel can lead to warped rotors and/or cracked rims (alloys anyway). Also, tightening in a circular as opposed to star pattern can cause the rim to seat unevenly and create a potentially hazardous driving condition. And never overtighten!! You'll curse yourself the next time you have to change a flat cause that jack handle wrench doesn't afford much leverage.
