Article on the Phoenix street racing scene
Just by changing the name of the city, this article could probably be applicable to any number of cities throughout the country, but it is interesting for AZ folks...

Interesting article. That would be real nice if they could get another track open in the NW valley. I live in Tempe, though, so Firebird is pretty convenient.
I guess I'm kind of on the fence as far as street racing. I know it's unsafe, it's antisocial, it's wasteful, etc, but when I come alongside someone at a light, I want to prove my car is faster, if possible. It's kind of an addiction--I know it's wrong, but I can't stop.

The thrill of illegal drags is something that can never be deplicated at a regulated drag strip. The thing that keeps me from not attending the illegal drags these days isn't the police, or the danger of racing. It's the people. It's filled with 16 year old thugs kids who hide behind guns and have no respect for anyone. That's nothing I want to be a part of. Back in the olden days (late 90s), I used to attend the illegals and it was a lot of fun. People just hanging out and showing off their cars. The only time I saw anyone get hurt was a guy who wrecked his bike. Anyhow,I'm not sure what my point is...

Interesting article.
I've never been to the drags for the reasons Aaron mentioned. I had a feeling it was just a bunch of punks so I never bothered to go. And for me at least... it's all about the accomplishment of going faster than you ever though you'd go. I could care less about the "thrill". I get a thrill at the track too!

I've never gone either for the same reasons. I went to some in south San Jose in the mid-90's, but nothing here in AZ.
I raced a friend in Tucson last weekend in his restored '68 Camaro and as Aaron mentioned, it was a huge rush and we a blast doing it but I'm always wary of an encounter with officers that wouldn’t be as understanding as the ones we met after our last mini-meet!
