Anybody else got his HIDs ripped off ???

Picture this ...Early Monday morning, Co-op City Garage, Bronx, NY. 2 Acura CL, and one CL-S(mine, 2 days old) got hit. Hood was popped up from underneath, all the lights and lamps stolen, wires all f**ed up. Estimated repair is around $3000 per car.
Would a hood lock help? Any other suggestions?

thats nuts!!!

the repair costs sound about right though.

was there hood damage (besides the locking mechanism?)

You need a good alarm bro! Try one that pages you when the alarm goes off.

There's more ... I had a passive alarm installed on mine by the dealer. What the thieves did to all 3 Acuras was to pop the hood and disconnect the battery !!! Bye Bye alarm.

yup, I heard this about 2 weeks ago from the tl fourm. I think this is the big thing in NY right now. stealing HID headlights. If you see a riced out accord, civ, or integra w/ cl or tl lights suggest you cut him off slam on your brakes so you can F' his lights.

I read on the TL Forum that this was a big problem.
I can’t believe that our hoods are so easy to open from underneath.

As for disconnecting the battery to kill the alarm, I had a back up battery hidden in the trunk on the Harrison Hellfire alarm in my Legend.
It was protecting a 4,000 dollar audio system.
I’m sure other companies make this stuff that we could use on an aftermarket system.

In some ways, I am happy I'm 40 and not 21 again, that way my car stays in the garage or not to far from me.

Co-op City, Bronx. Wow, that's a tough place to keep a new car. You must pay a fortune on insurance.

This story makes me really glad all over again that I no longer live in "the city". Great places to visit, NYC, San Francisco, Chicago, but wouldn't want to live there.

Here in rural Bumfuck, Orygun, you have to be mindful of the tobacco chewing red necks who'll run into you with their beater pickups, and maybe even try a hit and run. But at least nobody seems stupid enough to come onto my place, run the gauntlet of two 80# dogs, and steal my lights. I'll take a Rottweiler or German Shepard over a silent alarm every time.

Good luck nanadba!

PS Wanna borrow a big black dog .... they're really "sweethearts"!

Yeah, I agree, a good gaurd dog is the best alarm you can buy. Even a non-agressive dog is a big deterrant.

Back in the dark ages when I was really into car audio , very few installers even did hood locks - leaving a very vulnerable car to any thief who knows their sh!t. Looks like that hasn't changed Bummer on the repair - that sux big time!

If the CL-P/CL-S is anything like regular Hondas, the hood release cable runs along the driver's side wheel well. All a thief has to do to gain access to your engine bay is to reach into the wheel well and yank on it. It wouldn't be a bad idea to go to a reputable body shop and get them to re-route through another spot that is less accessible.

Thanks for this great tip. And that's why all the hoods on the 3 cars look perfect, untouched.

damn that REALLY blows. i'm actually worried now since i frequent NYC on the weekends and sometimes park my car on the streets if i can't cough up $40 for the night to park at a garage. wow... HID theft looks like it's on the rise. i only worry about my car when i go to my girlfriends' place since i park it on a high-traffic street. i'm not worried about it getting stolen, just vandalized since i'm not liked very much by my g/f's ex and his friends. everyone knows exactly what my car looks like, so seeing it alone on the street would be the perfect opportunity for my many haters.

Hood lock is useless because they are usually not after the headlight itself. What those guys are after is the HID module itself, that ACURA was smart enough to put right onto the headlight. When they tried to steal my headlights my alarm went off, and the good thing is that my alarm has a pager on it. I looked out the window saw those idiots and called the cops, 2 minutes later police arrest statistic was raised by 2 arrests (Helps when you live less than a 2 minute drive from a precinct and have shitloads of coffee shops in the area )
