Any need to heat oil up before changing “just” the filter?

Running with Mobile1 Syn and at the 4000 miles mark with OEM filter. I want to change the filter and leave the Mobile1 in until 7500 miles Do I need to heat the oil up like a normal oil change? I tend to think not, but want opinions?

I know... why am i using the OEM filter? I had an extra one hanging around. Next drain i plan on using a Mobile1 filter.

i think your question has to do with warming up the engine so the oil filter "O" ring won't stick to the engine and make it next to impossible to get off. even with a filter wrench.

i would suspect that it will be easier to remove if the engine is warmed up first and the filter along with it. you can try to remove it cold, but i'm pretty sure it'll be so stuck that you'll puncture the filter can before you can get it off. its not worth it. just drive it a few miles first, then let it set and cool down enough to handle the filter and spin it off.

if you do try it cold let us know how it goes........

Actually, I've thought the reason to drain the oil warm was to get the various precipitates back into solution, or at least off the floor of the oil pan, so that the change could more completely evacuate the unwanted contaminants in the oil.

I'm sure it's a bit easier to loosen the components when they are warm too (like carquest said) -- but this is probably more of an issue in the winter then the summer.

I don't think it'll matter either way for just a filter change, unless you think that running the car for a few minutes will allow the filter to grab a nanogram or two more of contaminant before you change.

And as a bit of an aside, if you are changing by the recommendations in the manual, you don't have to change the filter for 7500 miles under 'normal' conditions. YMMV.

No advantage to warming up the oil before changing just the filter... Need to warm up the oil before draining to get as much junk as you can out of the oil pan...

Also makes it easier to remove the filter if it's cold...

Cheers!
