Another Tranny Tale

2001 CL Type S just turned 30,000 miles. Car was too good to pass up, garaged its entire life so interior and exterior was in pristine condition. All 100,000 mile service completed before I bought the car including new front struts.

Ran beautifully for 5,000 miles but in the last week it began the delayed 2-3 and 3-4 shifts as well as delayed reverse engagement. Tranny fluid replaced in last year and looks and smells OK.

Acura dealer says their only alternative is replacement at $4,500-5,000. While the new tranny would be warrantied 3 yrs/36k miles I'm not sure the replacement would have any of the inherent problems "fixed". Service manager stated 3rd generation transmission would be used and these were "fixed" but that's not what I've been reading here and elsewhere.

Independent shop says will rebuild for $2,000 to $2,500 with better internal components and warrant for later of 18 mos or 18k miles.

Then ran across willowcreektransmissions.com who sell a completely rebuilt tranny for $1,495 and ship or install if I bring the car to them. Total price similar to independent shop but their website instills a bit more confidence on the rebuild since they appear to have done so many and go to great detail on the components they've chosen to do the rebuild. Not sure about the local shop.

Any thoughts on the alternatives. All I want is a trouble free commuter.

Thanks.

AV6 transmission or bust. Go to the 2nd gen TL side and look it up. All the swap info is there.

You might want to try replacing the Pressure Solenoids A/B and C. Clean the screens underneath.

Replace Shift Solenoid C; trans external filter.

I wouldn't let the shop convince you that they're going to have any better internal components. The issue is in the design of the fluid paths. The '06-'07 Accord V6 transmission is the sure-fire way to fix the problem and put transmission concerns in the rear-view. If this car is in as pristine condition as you say, perhaps it's worth the investment now to go ahead and spring for it.
