another bose question

For all you stereo guys out there (SCCL, EricL, etc...):
A- Is it possible to add an aftermarket amp and subwoofer to the stock bose system w/out having to gut the whole stereo and buy all new components?
B- If so, please try to explain to me in English how you have to wire them into the system.
C- Is it going to sound worth a damn if I do this? Thanks.

i did a tremendous upgrade yesterday. The cleanest convertor I found is by Installer edge. The factory radio and speakers need SERIOUS equalization though.
Using an Audio Control eql-s2 is a good EQ and level matcher and can be put in the trunk.

In a nutshell, yes you can. What do you have in mind? It is very important to keep the load that the headunit sees as similar as possible between the two amps. From where did you intend to tap input? I might suggest taking the input off of the front channel, and using the crossover of the amp (or an active cross) to route lows to the sub, highs to the front. Mr BBsAcuraRacing continues...

You will want to use a line converter to cut down the power of the factory signal for the amp, and make sure the HU sees a constant load across its channels. An EQ will help balance the sound, but in this arrangement, your fader, Bass, and Treble controls will get you a long way.

As for sounding good, well, this will be an improvement. You may want to consider replacing the front speaker sets (don't fret too much about the rear if you don't have the cash - that is the last place you spend cash in a car audio system IMHO). Make sure you do not skimp on the amp. If you're not doing a competition system, just want it to sound good, I've been real happy with my Rockford Fosgate 400.4 punch. I used it to do the above, and it has line inputs (no need for a line level converter, although one would help a little).

If this is what you want (or what ever you decide), let us know. Email me, I'd be happy to draw you a schematic.

Jason
