Altinator bottom bolt broke!!! Suggestion/info

2 days ago I opened my hood (2001 CL-S) and my cousin noticed that my altinator was not in the right spot, causing my altinator belt to not spin straight... We discovered that the bottom altinator bolt (14mm) had broke.

My question is, what do I do? If do it myself, can some one chime on the steps(please be specific(not really mechanically inclined), but if I have machanic do it, how much would it cost roughly?

Any help or suggestions appreciated..

Maybe I should have posted this in the 'problems & fixes'. I thought I did, so how do I move this thread to that section?

+1 for drilling and extracting it. Then you just need to find a new bolt and remount it.

I've had to extract some bolts this way before, its not that bad.

I just checked under my hood. That bolt is like an inch long ( the alt housing is an inch thick in that area) before it threads into the block.

Are you saying the bolt is still in the block and there is nothing sticking out at all? Or is the bolt head missing and there is play in the alternator.

Did you remove the alt to find this out? Cause if not maybe the bolt may not even be there at all.. Could have been stripped and fell out or whatever.

But if u are sure your situation is what is depicted in the video you are looking at a very careful extraction. There is very little space and to get a drill in there at a 90degree relationship. Extracting that bolt is going to be a feat. Just make absolutely your center point is 100% centered, if u start and is 20-30% more to one side you could be screwed. It could go too far to one side and the extraction method will no longer be an option short of grinding it flat then retrying

Has the car been worked on in that area ever? It seems like that would be caused by someone rather than be wear an tear related. I cannot see that bolt snapping for any normal reason

The shop should take care of this without any cost to you. That's assuming that they are honest and competent. They either over tightened the bolt, causing it to fatigue, stretch, or crack; or they under tightened it, and the alternator vibrated to the point that it broke the bolt. Good luck!

Ok we get it... U smoke lol.

I dunno if u made any removal attempts but...That bolt looks like an extraction was attempted, given there appears to be a center point on the bolt in the block.

If it does not come out with the typical extraction method IMHO your last resort is to get a tiny bit and drill a center hole through the bolt, then slowly move up in bit size till there is very little wall thickness and it should be able to remove by collapsing the rest of material, or wedging a flathead in it and turning. That's what I would be thinking at that point at least.
