Damn, you were good. I couldn't wait that long. Go for it, just don't do it excessively for awhile.

Eh? What are you talking about? The oil that comes with the car is thicker break-in oil and should stay in for min 5000 miles, optimal 7500 miles. You can race your car after 1,000 miles with no sweat. These engiles are tough as hell and well manufactured. By 1k miles everything is settled.

say what???? 3500 miles? are you kidding? that is way too long... my break-in was like 1000, and even with that period, i had coupla of 6000rpm... and there was no way that I could keep the car under 70mph... I remember my car was cruising at 85/90 mph, and the rpm was only around 2500rpm.

I think 1000 is enough... besides isn't VTEC supposed to be a high revving one?

But so far, I haven't redlined mine yet... will soon.

The manual says 600 miles for break in. The stupid sales people say just hammer it out the door.

Acura Care said that they put in plain old oil (hmmm, what do they know).

Jens, said that they do put in special break in oil.

My dealer says they don't use special oil. God, I prefer to trust Jens, but I don't have any sworn statements yet

If you drove like grandma for 600 miles, then hammered it, you probably would be ok. However, it would be better to slowly up the rpms and throttle as you put more miles on it (just my old timer opinion)

Yes if I remember correctly almost a year ago I went to 3500. Probably saved my life at the same time because it takes time to get adjusted to a new car notwithstanding the break-in period.

In any case, I've done enough redlining and high rev for a lifetime, for 10 men. I certainly was not in a hurry to drive like a idiot too soon. If you drive 1000 or 10,000 or 100,000 without going over 75mph or 3000 rpm, then you are normal, no big deal.

Man, as soon as I hit 651 I stopped my car and did a 0-100 run just to see how it was since I was dying to find out for 650 miles. Go ahead open her up you'll instantly fall in love w/ her speed/performance.

Well, if you bought your car with more than 50 miles on it then somebody already ragged it out during a test drive anyways...

Realistically:

500 miles is the average break in period for all new naturally-aspirated engines. The primary reason for this is so that the valves seat properly. Secondarily for the rings to get some wear as not to score the cylinder walls under high RPM. There are numerous other parts main bearing, cam seates, etc... that need to "wear" in properly and seat themselves however the valves are the biggest concern as improperly seated valves will plaugue you for the duration of your car with problems ranging from lower compression ratios to blow-by on compression strokes. For safe measure 1K miles should be observed with minimal exposure above 5K for the first 500 at a minimum and no prolonged red-lines for a thousand.... Just some advice for our new owners

lol, i remember my rpm went out 5500 right after i went out from the dealer entrance. cuz i cant wait to feel the 260 HP. =)
but anywayz i have 2700 miles. and i dont know if i have redlined it but when i see a FINE ASS CHICK, i will do whatever to keep up with her. hehe
and plus, if u bought a CL-S and only drive really slow all the time and keep ur RPM under 3000 for 1000, 10000, 100000. then y did u even buy a car with 260 HP? i suggest u 2 trading the CL-S for a corolla or a Civic. =)

break it in the way you normally drive (within reason). i redline it in first to second and second to third everytime time i drive the car (after 600 miles) if i did'nt, i would have never spent the extra $ and bought a 260 h.p vtec. just don't lug the engine during break in (600mi) after that take no prisoners. i have had several new cars in my lifetime and have never had a major mechanical problem. engines fail because of poor maintainence, they are dyno tested during developement harder than most people will ever drive them, after all you own a honda ie; engineering, enjoy it.

YOU GOT 600 MILES, SO GOOOOO FOR IT. THAT ENGINE IS MADE TO REV. I PUT 600 MILES ON THE FIRST WEEK BECAUSE I COULD not WAIT. I HAVE IT 5 WEEKS WITH 2700 MILES. I HAVE REDLINED IT ALMOST EVERY DAY. BY THE WAY, I HAVE OWNED 30 CARS IN MY LIFE AND HAVE NEVER SPENT A PENNY ON ENGINE REPAIR. THE FIRST 600 WILL DETERMINE THE REST OF THE ENGINES LIFE UNLESS YOU GET A LEMON
GOOD LUCK.
