Add another amp or sell mine and get a better one?

I've got a 500/1 right now, and I'm looking to upgrade to more powerful subs, which would require more power from the amp.

Would it be better to pick up another JL Audio 500/1 and connect the two together, or sell mine and get a 1000/1?

Or is it OK to hook up my current 500/1 to an amp of a different brand?

That's not necessarily true. The more powerful subs might be more efficent, esp combined with a proper enclosure. However, they also could use more power. It all depends.

NO! Unless the amps say that you can hook two together, DO NOT DO IT!!! You will fry all sorts of stuff. Especially DO NOT hook the amp to a different make! Sell your amp and buy a new one. Or, buy some DVC subs that will work with the minimum load of your amp and run a 500/1 on each sub.

OK, more details here...

I'm running 2 10" Kenwood Tornadoes. They are rated at like 200 watts RMS or something like that.

I want to upgrade to JL Audio 12 W6v2's -- two of them. They are rated at 400 watts RMS. One 500/1 wouldn't cut it.

What if I got a 250/1 and hooked it up with the 500/1 for a total of 750 watts? That would be OK to power two 12" W6v2's right?

Yea, feed those to the speaker dogs.

A 500/1 should cut it fine, but it depends what you want. Simply upgrading your subs (w/ a proper box) should give you some gains. The max you'll get from going from 500 to 1000 watts is only ~3db anyway, which is not audible to most peeps. You'll get better gains from a properly designed slot ported box.

NO! That will just fry both amps. Not to mention the extra 250 watts won't make any audible difference (~1.5db). If you are going to do anything, either get a 1000/1 or get a DVC version of the w6s and run a 500/1 on each sub.

So are you saying that I could power two 12" W6v2's with one 500/1 amp?

JL Audio's web site says that the lowest wattage allowed for a 12" W6v2 is around 200-250 watts, and optimum range is 300-400 watts. If I'm running two, isn't one 500/1 cutting it too close??

Also, is it hard to build your own box? I'm looking at the recommended sealed enclosure specs and it says 18" x 16" x 14.125" (W x H x D) for one subwoofer.

Do I just make a box that is 36" x 16" x 14.125"?? Do I have to seperate the box in half inside the box?
