The CL has a 2 coat paint process, right, I thought I heard that somewhere? What about the 2003, any different?

The CL has a measly 2-coat, 1-bake paint process. Same for the TL.

The 2003 CL will be the same as well.

Claims by Acura, CL specific...

Our engineers get hung up on details. And that's just the way we like it.

Furthering our commitment to the highest build quality, every CL is subjected to rigorous anti-corrosion and paint processes that rank among the most demanding in the auto industry. First, electrodeposition coating on the raw metal uses an electric charge to draw an anti-corrosion coating over every seam and contour of the CL body's raw metal. The body is then carefully washed, dried and inspected for even the slightest imperfection in preparation for undercoating application. The base coat and subsequent color coats are baked in a low-temperature oven to ensure that each coating is completely cured, followed by another round of washing, drying and inspection. The final step is the application of a durable clear coat designed to resist fading, oxidation and discoloration from environmental pollutants. The outcome is a brilliant, enduring finish.
Claims by Acura that may not be specific to any one model, other Acuras (non TL/CL have different paint processes). It seems to be different at each manufacturing plant.

It's only as thick as a sheet of paper.
But it looks deep enough to swim in.

Acura's paint process is without doubt one of the most thorough and rigorous in the industry. It begins by carefully preparing the raw body and removing every blemish and irregularity. The body is then washed, dried and submerged in an electro-deposition bath that draws an anti-corrosion coating deep into every crevice by means of an electrical current.

What follows is a complex procedure of applying a layer of paint, baking it in a low temperature oven, washing, drying, more paint, another session in the oven and so on. The final step is the application of a durable clear coat that's designed to resist fading, oxidation and even shrug off environmental pollutants that could stain the paint.
Oxygen may sustain all life, but it also loves to feast on metal.

The technically minded call it oxidation. It's a chemical process where oxygen combines with metal. To the rest of us, it's just plain rust. Left unchecked, rust can consume an entire car body in a few years. Which is why Acura employs some of the toughest anti-corrosion measures in the business. In addition to the electro-deposition coating, all Acura cars receive special anti-corrosion coatings and anti-chipping barriers in critical areas that are subject to pitting by road debris and road salts. In addition, special waxy oil is injected into hollow body cavities.

Thats what happens when you let liberal tree huggers run the place. Liberals may be stupid, but they're good in the sack. (Referring to my orange haired liberal nut GF sophomore year of college).

I beleive that Acura jumped the gun on the new paint (not required until 2003?). I would say, therefor it was an Acura screw up in not spending the available time to develop a new process.

Interesting, since BMW uses a powder clear coat for their cars -- no pollution problems and the stuff is tough!

http://www.ppg.com/news_corporat/pr_0095.htm

(It says for the BMWs coming off the line in Germany, but also notice the reference to the environmental friendly nature. If you have ever seen a Eastwood catalog, or know about powder coating, the stuff is rather benign...)

There is a link to a .pdf at the end that also talks about the power coat clear coat as used by BMW, Harley Davidson, and others (in the US and elsewhere) and talks about various issues. A good read if you are interested in what could have been (or what you might want to look for)...

CLEAR ADVANTAGE EMERGING WITH PPG’S BREAKTHROUGH POWDER COATING

PITTSBURGH -- A breakthrough in automotive paint technology is responsible for the gleaming finishes of autos rolling off the BMW production line in Germany. The coating is environmentally benign, speeds production and improves finish quality.
