The instructions recommend driving around a bit to orientate the system before programming a route.

4) Are there any other new features on this disc - any changes to the user interface, look and feel, will it look more like the new Voice Activated Navigation Systems (orange labeled DVD)?
The look and feel of the program is purposely similar to previous releases. The changes are detailed above. The only noticeable difference is that because of the near doubling of roads, and points of interest, the system may appear slightly slower that the previous version.
Bummer i thought it was gonna have a new interface...

Albany appears to be fully mapped.

Now EVERYTHING is.
Before, all I had were a few black lines on the screen for only the MAJOR roads.
Now there are yellow parks areas, green golf courses, blue waterways and every side street is on there no matter how small.
I even passed by a large cemetery this morning that is on my route to work every day.
Normally it’s just a blank screen, now even the access roads are mapped on the display.
The GUI is exactly the same except for the new “verified routing” feature which I haven’t really looked into yet.
As for the new voice, I don’t really care for it. I like the Asian accent in the old version.
But I’ll easily take the road coverage over THAT difference.
Another drawback is many of the side roads are represented on the screen in a tan or dark yellow color.
This doesn’t work too well on a gray background.
All the majors are still BLACK, so I guess this is a minor annoyance.
I guess if everything was black it might look confusing on the screen.
Still gets a major from me.

Did i just read something above about it being slower? Please say it aint so. If it is any slower i can look it up on mapquest before it programs. (love it way better than the lexus one but that one is so much faster)
Shawn, any change is speed?

I think it’s just the route calculation when you initially hit OK for the trip.
I didn’t really notice this when I was checking the streets for Soopa this morning.
As soon as I hit OK the start of the travel route was displayed in BLUE a few seconds later.
I zoomed out so I could jump up to Albany and the entire route was displayed.
It’s really too early to make comparisons though.

I’m still waiting for the colorful commentary that we usually get from jimcol711 since a few months ago he was so SURE that we would never see this release.
And all the other NAVI-BASHERS.

If you make a copy of the disc and you install it, your Navi firmware will upgraded automatically and you may as well sell your old disc. That means you are forced to use the copy.
If that copy fails for any reason (and something tells me there is a reason why copies seem to fail), then you are SOL. Unless you go buy a new disc or get another copy.

No...
I'm sure it's just using the newer format. And a new flash.
If you have a copy, and it fails. Have another one made.
Copies fail because of cheap media Ken, not because of some consipracy against piracy. And this happens for more than just the Acura NAVI. XBOX, PS2, DVD moves... it's the media...
DVD writebles are NOT designed to be used in areas where the temperatures change a lot and they are exposed to the sun. (not that sun exposure will have any effect on a unit in a trunk)
Good DVD writeable media will last 10+ years shelf life in optimal conditions. Good media will handle the temperature changes too.
Same problems are happening now with CDR media. Folks are finding the disc(s) are going bad over time. However CDRs use a puch larger pit in the disc. So failure would be expected to be less.

Mine's coming Monday as well. From the FAQ on the www.acuranavi.com site, it looks like the verified vs. unverified routing has to do with the new rural roads being added. The FAQ has quite a few disclaimers about the quality of the rural road data, and if you use verified route data, the calculation will ignore the rural road data. The unverified uses all the data available to try and come up with the route, but there may be a higher chance that the route will take you the wrong way down a one-way street, or may take you to the wrong address within a street.

here is one of guys for TL site said about it
Installed New DVD Navi Disk!
well after a long time waiting for this updated disk, i was very dissapointed!!
It looks EXACTLY the same as the previous version, the only thing they added to the menu is a option to turn unverified routing on or off, it is a bunch of crap, for example , i live in michigan and they expanded the M5 freeway like a year and a half ago and the new expansion is not on there, i was soo dissapointed, i havent really gotten that in depth into it yet, but i would say they just took the last version and added this unverified crap to it!!
Two thumbs down in my book, and definitly not worth the 202 dollars i payed for it, i got the 2nd day air delivery!!
So Buyer beware , not worth it at all in my book!! your experience may very depending on where you live!!

LOL, then the navi dvd backup that you gave to me was crap. It failed.
I'm getting a couple of the new ones, do you want one?

Eventhough my neighborhood STILL isn't on the new disc I like it.
I like the voice.
I programmed my job address in for the commute from lunch. It shows up now but still an "unverified" street.
It's cool though because the street shows (in grey) but can not be part of the route (in blue).
It still took me to the address.
It did this wierd triangleation (sp) thing to with a dotted line to get me there. COOL!
So far, so good.

I drive all over northern and southern California, and the only time I can remember driving in an unmapped area was when I drove out to Reno (it had the main road through town, but not some of the side roads). I'm currently on v. 2.03. I still ordered the new disk (should have it Monday), because of the updates to all of the restaurants and other POI's. Heck, if my DVD was pressed in 2000, that means the data is no newer than 98/99, and a database of restaurants 5 years ago is quite out of date. It's unrealistic to think that this DVD will be up to the minute as of 11/03, but the POI data will be a couple of years newer...

You can't use that one anyway after you install the new one.

Lotsa people here regretting they don't have the navi. When I went to trade my 2002 rsx-s for the same but a 2003, I was very unhappy that it was exactly the same car, and I wasn't gonna fork over $4,000 for new car smell. So I drove a non navi cls6 in satin silver, fell in love with it, and bought it on the spot. No spoiler.
Then I got my wheels done in that black chrome, and realized anthricite was the color I needed. But this time, I got everything I wanted. Navi, spoiler.
Being from Chicago but picking up the car in Columbus, I had no time and no clue to how to program the damn thing, so I asked the dealer to do it for me to a little burb about 100 miles away. It works flawlessly.
And even when towns ARE outside of the database, it will still get you to the center of the town. Better than nothing.
What almost nobody talks about is that when you get the navi, You also get Onstar for nothing. I find Onstar just as useable as the navi. Onstar means that there is a phone built into the base of the rearview mirror, and it is well worth activating! When you activate Onstar, they give you 60 free phone minutes, but you must use them up in the next 30 or 60 days, I forget.
But this is great! Now the navi finds my way, and I can talk hands free. Sure as hell beats driving with some shitty little mapquest map in one hand and talking on a cell phone in the other. Once your free minutes are up, you can buy blocks of 100 for $35-that's not bad. And although the navi is easy to use, Onstar is pure childs play. Everything is voice activated. And Onstar does more.
Remote locking/unlocking of your doors if you call them 1-800 4 Onstar. Free stolen car location (your navi and LOJACK are essentially the same thing). If your airbags deploy, they will send a tow truck (you're gonna need it). Then they call you to see if you are ok. If you don't answer, they automatically send an ambulance. If somehow you get lost, just push the Onstar button and they will help you find your way. All this is free for one year, then $169 per year after that. I will DEFINITELY RENEW.
Anyway, I got sidetracked. I know there are people on this board who went into Acura, bought their CL with cash and owned free and clear as of day one. And then there is probably the true fanatic who eats bread and water for three years because they could just barely afford them. I fall somewhere in the middle.
My point is that these are $31,550 dollar cars. Another $2,000 to get what you want is probably what should be done. I know now, I will never have another car that doesn't have heated seats, a navi and Onstar.
If it is any solace to you non navi owners, check your high end electronics stores. Aftermarket units are available.
One thing I don't understand. When I bought cls6 #1 (both are 2003's), Acura didn't even offer to demonstrate a navi to me. They would sell a lot more navi models if they made customers aware.

Can someone with the new NAVI Disc see if you can put in BC for a state?
I know it's not supposed to have Canada coverage, but I'm hoping they screwed up and it really has British Columbia in there.
Thanks!

My dealership said the first batch of DVDs they got were not reading properly and were not updated properly so they sent them back to Alpine/Acura and were going to be getting "fixed/revised" DVDs this Monday. Supposedly they were overnighted on Friday. I suspect this is BS but I just wanted to pass the info along...
I'll post my thoughts on the new Navi DVD for the northern VA/DC area when I Get the disc monday.

I received my new NAVI DVD on 11/20 and have noticed something that no one has brought up yet; my old NAVI would give directions all the way down to which side of the street my destination was on, while the new NAVI does not. I was hoping that the new NAVI would have my location corrected (the old one thinks I live across the street), but I can not tell, since it is a little less precise. Anyone else notice this?
