Acura News and Rumors

I know there are lots of rumor running around this website, including the future of the CL.

Here is what I was told by a sales agent at an Acura dealer in Southern California:
1) The Acura TL will get a minor update for 2007. However, it has been confirmed that they plan to bring back the Type-S name. So there will be a 2007 Acura TL Type-S rated at about 290 horsepower.
2) There are no plans for a CL. However, Acura plans to make a TSX coupe and a TSX coupe convertible. They will be released in 2007. Since the RSX will no longer be made (according to Car and Driver magazine), the TSX coupe will be the replacement. It will not be a hatchback--it will be a coupe in the style of the CL with the TSX lines. The sales agent said it will be bigger than the RSX but smaller than the TSX. He did not know the engine type, but if he had to guess, he said that the coupe would probably have an option for the 240 horsepower engine with the turbo from the RDX.
3) Acura's main competition is Lexus, and they are making these changes to match cars like the IS 250/350. They also are competing with the G35, which continues to sell well. Acura knows that they have to offer some kind of coupe--the TSX seems to be the best choice.

That is what I was told. I hope it turns out to be true. As current 2003 Acura CL Type-S owner, I look forward to the future of the Acura coupes. And if I ever need a four door car, I would like to see a TL Type-S.

sounds good, i just hope its true... i cant wait to see the new coupes, and PRAYING for a Turbo Acura

That's crazy, I do think they will build a coupe off the TSX, but as far as it competing with anything from Lexus or Infiniti, that's a Joke. A 4 cylinder vs 6's and probably an 8 cyl option in the new G35.
Not what I would want to buy. How can they compare a TSX coupe to a G35 or an IS coupe? They need something to go up against the BMW 3 coupe!

Acura ain't ever going to compete with Lexus except in their dreams! I own both and there is no comparison in either service quality or build quality.

Frustrated, I think a well-designed TSX coupe might actually sell well, but how does an entry level coupe bring Acura up to the BMW, Infiniti, and Lexus coupes??
Acura is afraid of offering really premium vehicles!

I want a premium coupe. The new BMW 335 (bi-turbo) coupe and 08 Infiniti G35 (G37?) coupe are looking better and better. The Lexus IS is a bust with no shifter on the 350.

BTW it's all but confirmed the TL type S will be the SH-AWD 3.5L

when would this be coming out

GreenMonster 07-18-2006 04:34 PM

This is all stuff that we've heard about before here and on vtec.net...

Just more proof that the dealership people don't know anymore then we do (and most of the time they know less)...

Sounds like your sales agent memorized the chart on vtec.net ;)

edit: check out the Automotive News forum here for discussions on all of the things you mentioned (you'll have to search 'cause alot of the topics are old)...

Some interesting news indeed... tho i think Acura has to be more agressive. These are indeed the right steps to take, but maybe something bigger. I like the 2DR Tsx idea, but it still a TSX. If they want to stay with the 2dr bimmers and Infinities, they have to have something stronger.

BigLizard 07-18-2006 08:39 PM

Theoritcal stuff is good...The TL maybe, 2-door TSX...don't see it happening.

If there was an insider from Acura actually running their mouth on Acurazine that would be good stuff, but we can't bank any of this stuff is going to make it to the show floor. Acura wants to keep its buyers and not lose them because they put out some gawdy monstrosity that couldn't keep up with Infinity or BMW. :what:

GreenMonster 07-18-2006 09:15 PM

The only benefit from having a tsx coupe would be that the tsx is lighter (3268 lbs) then the CLS is (3446 lbs for the 6spd)... That of course would be without adding the weight of the turbo motor and AWD...

I'd like to see a sub nsx... a "real" RWD sportscar with just a smaller motor then the V10 that's going in the next gen NSX... Light, RWD, and a decent bang for the buck...

NightRider 07-19-2006 12:03 AM

A new tsx coupe and a new tl are highly likely. Reason is, anyone who is a bigwig at Acura knows the majority of their sales come from RSX/TSX/TL (compact/ midsize) models. You have to go with what sells. Although changes have/are being made to models like the RL, and NSX, they are slower than the aforementioned models in their evolution because of sales. This is why there is such a gap between generations of RL and NSX cars. People do realize that besides 15 hp and advancing luxury feautures, the RL did not change from 1996 to 2004 right? The NSX was born in 1991, and besides 20 hp, Targa top, and a 6MT, it did not change until 2002. To one who says Acura is not at Lexus levels, Lexus is not at MB and BMW levels! Both companies have AMG/M lines, and although the IS350 is getting closer to C55/M3, not quite there. The new LS will be close to an S600/S65 and 760. The GS430 does not compare to E55 or M5 as of yet. It is great that the new NSX will have a V10, how about a V8 in an RL? If the TL gets SH-AWD and the 3.5L, it is time for the RL to make the next jump!

JadeFox 07-19-2006 01:23 AM

Acura should hire you as a "thought" man...

Greenmonster hit the nail on the head...light, RWD, manual is what Acura needs

Dead on about Acura but Lexus is 100% right there with BMW and MB, they just offer a different type of car. The Germans win out b/c of the performance they offer. Lexus doesn't try to match their performance but instead beats them in refinement. :Lexus doesn't offer "tuner" versions of their cars but will give you one of the plushest most comfortable rides out their

typeR 07-19-2006 09:43 AM

there's no need at all for the RL to go V8 instead all thats needed is the 100hp IMA ...imagine a 390 hp /350lb.ft. sh awd RL getting 30+ MPG and is a hybrid with it's tax right off

Cocoa 07-19-2006 03:02 PM

I've heard of the 2dr TSX idea.

I just want the J series engine to step it up a bit, no matter what platform they use. It'll give us the probabilty of building another frankenstein engine on A-CL/. :)

Back in 2000 when I got my CL-S, my sales "agent" told me that the next RL was going to have a V8 with RWD and an optional hybrid system driving the front wheels for AWD.

The dealer...oops, i mean "agent", also told me about the CL-S's "exxon" headlights and that the strut tower bar was to prevent intrusion of the engine into the passenger compartment during a crash.

really? is the difference that apparent? I might have to go check out a lexus. which model most closely compares to the 3.2 CL in your opinon?

IS350...? :dunno:

Mind you, I sat in it and found it very cramped...the size is almost more TSX-ish. So, I'd go out on a limb to say that the CL would be up against a larger-sized vehicle like the GS-series...but, Lexus has no coupe in that class. :dunno:

GreenMonster 08-11-2006 07:15 AM

While this thread started about a replacement for the CL (i.e. another Acura coupe), it's turning into a "acura vs. lexus" thread... Which makes it about something other then the 2nd Gen CL, which is a cartalk topic.

:lock:

lcstyle, feel free to ask your question about lexus in CARTALK:
