Question Acura CL/TL S Top Speed

What kind of speeds do our cars max out at? I reached 150 mph, in my 2001 CL Type S automatic. I am still stock except for a K&N filter.
Do modifications raise the top speed?

^^ What he said. CL/TL-P is 147mph.

Remove the governor, and you will see how fast this car can go.

OK . Click the FAQ link in my signature. This has been talked about many of times before. Welcome to the moneypit if you haven't been introduced yet.

Nah you wouldn't be dead, I crashed my 72 skylark going 80 mph around a bend in the cold months of winter and survived at 18. At least CL's have crumple zones and air bags. I say take the governer off and go for it and let us know what speed you hit before you reck! Kidding of course.

I'd be a little scared to go pass the limiter on public highways

Age isn't the main factor, just maturity/brain level behind the wheel and full use of common sense, in fact use of all senses, will determine whether you wreck it or not. But that's not the topic at hand.

Everyone who asks about the top speed of our cars or talks about going to the limiter, should automatically get pm'ed the thread about the chick in the porsche.

You need a long ass stretch of road and a horseshoe (luck for no cops) to go anymore then 150. Even without heavy mods, it will take a long ass time for 4th gear to get up there.

My 1st car was a 84 Z28 with a 350 at 15 and my second car was a 86 camaro with a small block 454 at 17. I have only been in one wreck (I wasnt driving) Age doesn't matter, its whether the kid paid for his own car or not.

I don't know how you guys reach speeds like 140 & 150mph on stock suspension. When I reach speeds over 100mph the car looses its stability. Maybe somethings loose? I had a 98 Maxima with stock suspension and 15" wheels and i reached 130mph and had more control.

Thats a pretty lame comment, becuase the number 1 factor is Experience behind the wheel. When you are 18, you have atmost 1.5 years of driving experience and you still feel invincible.

First, its retarded to hit the limiter without any suspension mods, our cars roll like a bitch at speeds over 100 with sways or springs.
Second, you hit the limiter once to say you did it, the next time you do it, your trying to kill yourself.

there are a few ways you can make a 454 small block, and on some engines depending on the class it could be considered a small block or big block
you could stroke and bore out a 350 to that size!

and no i think the ageof someone lets people assume that there a bad or inexperienced driver cause of the lack of driving time. wont argue that being 18 might have only got you 2 or so years of driving under your belt, but at the same time you dont know if that kid has been racing go karts or anything like that since he was 10 years old right? look at casey kane he is an amazing driver, and how old is he??

most likely reason for car being limited to 147mph....tires are speed rated for 150mph second reason is most likely car becomes areodynamically unstable at anything above those speeds....

no matter what suspension mods you have on our cars, it will come part like a egg dropped on a counter if you hit anything at 147mph......

I find it interesting that the new 07 type S is limited to 136mph....lol are they trying to give the cops a fighting chance? lol........:P

12o is as far as I'll go. In a quarter mile this beast would be lucky to break 12o. I'm not worried about taking the governer off.

147mph = 237 kph
thats incredible , we would all die if it was ungoverend, judging by the way you get down in third gear in these things.
wow, what suspension requirements make it safe at these high speeds?

it takes a lot more than a good suspension to go 150+ safely.

yep. thats what i say too. i never take it fast in anything higher than 3rd. besides who likes flooring it in an OD gear....all it does is make you feel slow.

I've gone about 130 before, but haven't found the need to hit the limiter...

My last car, a 1994 Tbird w/ a 4.6 V8 was limited to 109mph...

The only time I hit the limiter was after drinking... So the stock suspension felt GREAT at that speed... J/K

Nah, don't hit the limiter on public roads unless you are a very experienced driver and there is absolutely no other car on the road. You are responsible for other people's lives on the road as well as your own and at those speeds you can kill someone easy...
IMO, don't go that fast!!!

HAHA...
You just reminded me on how much control my 1985 Prelude (canadian model, loved it! KPH and everyone thought I was going 220 when it was only 130mph, because of the speedo) had GREAT control at high speeds...
The car had manual steering and you only had to turn the steering wheel once (as apossed to twice) to go from center to full left. On the highway, I would just turn the wheel around 1/16 - 1/8 of a turn and it would switch lanes completly and fast (I had stock pizza cutters on it too).
There was several times that if I was in my CL and did what I did in that car, that I would have killed myself and others (not good). My cousin nearly shit himself when I had no where to go at 125mph and had to cut from middle lane to left with the car in front of me about less than a foot away and the tractor trailor that was in the left lane was mere inches away (looked like only two in the mirror) from my rear bumper. Of course that was stupid and I know that. I was young (17) and stupid back then...

If you were asking me, NO.
The CL-S has a better suspension than the CLP.
BUT... It's still a stock suspension and should be replaced.
If you do plan on going faster on the street, I would sugest dropping it and getting progressive springs. Get sway bars and strut braces... Blah, blah, blah.
Read some threads on this forum, plenty of people have sugested setups that would be great for you.
As far as suspension, I can't tell you anything. I am still on stock at 104k... Sad, I know.

I need to get some spending cash and start my mods, I am getting tired of the car since it's stock (I still love it, just tired of it).
I guess I could have used that $8000.00 I spent on going to Hawaii instead... I had $30,000 sitting in the bank and spent on stupid shit... Damn it!

120's the fastest I've ever gone, and probably as fast as I ever will go on the highway. It was scaryy as hell!!! Once I passed 110 and the lines on the road become ONE big one, I felt like if I hit one little bump in the road I was done!!! The car felt completely unstable at that high speed. The only reason I went that fast to begin with, was cuz some ricer in a '94 Prelude with an unpainted body kit and coffee can exhaust thought he could take me on!!! I had to smoke him and teach the poor kid a lesson!!! I mean c'mon now, wouldnt you have done the same?!?!?!!

Lots of you people who say your car feels unsafe over 100mph is probably because of unbalanced tires, slightly bent rims, and/or cheap tires. At those high speeds you really start to notice the difference between quality tires and cheapies.

I got a slightly modded suspension, but even before that, I could easily cruise at 100mph without a problem.

100's not an issue for me, though I am running on original tires with 33k miles on them and nearly bald...I'm in the process of buying new tires, and I posted a new thread about all season tires and I'm waitin on some replies! Also now with all my mods(i.e.sways/strut) I deff. would feel safer doing 100+ mph. And of course NEW TIRES!!!!!!!!!!!

Well it depends on how ghetto you want to go with your tires. I for one will never go cheap on tires because you end up having them on your car for 2 years and might end up spending $300 more for a good set of tires.

Lets say you have them on your car for 600 days. That means you are paying $.50 more a day for good tires.

I have Bridgestone Turanzas LS-V, the brand new model that just came out. They were like $700 mounted and balanced, I swear by these tires.

I also heard some good things about these new Goodyears.
