98 3.0CL vs 98+ Accord V6 coupe

In my 98 3.0 CL last night when I spot this 98 or newer Accord V6 coupe that has a kit, spoiler, two exhaust cans, an intake and who know what else. I have been looking to run this kid for over 2 weeks. We get side by side at a light. When we take off, we are dead even until Vtec then he starts to pull ahead before we shut down at 70. We go from a 40 MPH roll an he pulled slowly until 90 when we shut down. He was cool, I wanted to talk but all I got was a wave and he turned on a different road.

The 98 3.0 CL and 98+ V6 Accord have the same 3.0 V6 right? So he was pulling ahead because of the intake and exhaust or did he have NOS? I didn't really think that cans and intakes really make that much differance.

Are you sure that is al he had for mods? Guess that you couldn't ask him since he took off.

The AEM Cold Air Intakes make a significant difference in those accords -- about 10 HP difference, most noticeably on the high end, so based upon your description of the race, that sounds like a possible mod he may have had.

if it makes a significant difference in the accords, it should for the 3.0 cls too since we're the same engine right

It should, but did the Acura have a CAI? I didn't see that he did.

No, my CL is bone stock. Well I did remove the air silencer but that shouldn't give me any gains.

If a cold air intake give us 10 hp on the 3.0, I need to get one then because he was pulling away on me, it must have made the differance for him winning. :o

Yeah, definitely get a CAI. That is a great mod and will definitely allow you to beat a stock CL or Accord of that class.

I raced my friend who has a stock 3.0 Accord V6 against my 3.0 Accord V6 w/CAI and I beat him by about 2 car lengths. This was from a stop until 90. It was even until 30 MPH, then that is when I started to pull on him.

The CAI is not the only thing that would make you win that race. There are many other factors involved, such as reaction time, tire traction, etc. A CAI actually improves the low-end power and a SR intake improves the high-end power. It's physics. I recently raced a 2002 V6 Altima auto and beat him by 1/2 a car when we shut down at 130mph.

That isn't entirely true. Although a CAI will give you slightly more HP on low end, most of the power actually comes at the very top end of your powerband in the high RPMs.

That's what I thought until I read this:

There was also a big discussion on this here:

I think you are misunderstanding my point. My point is that a CAI versus a stock intake won't really get its advantage until the higher RPMs. A CAI won't get its peak HP until the very top end. That was my point in telling when I started to gain on my friend with his stock intake.

Ok. Your talking about PEAK horsepower, not AVERAGE hp across the RPM range. MY point was that CAI make more power lower down in the RPM range than SR intakes. Now I see you were comparing OEM intake to CAI. Gotcha.

Whatevers clever! :P BTW: Have you seen the DIY Icebox mod? Inexpensive and a good place to start modding.
