390 hp, 12 second quarter mile Mustang SVT Cobra is cover story of June Car & Driver

The Verdict from the mag:
Highs: Instant throttle response, tons of torque, well-sorted handling
Lows: Supercharger whine, usual Mustang ergonomics, fuel consumption
Verdict: A ton of fun, and the best Mustang Cobra ever

0-60 mph in 4.5
Quarter in 12.9 at 111 mph

Price: $35,345

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Too much money for a Ford, but it would still be fun to drive.

Lows: Supercharger whine
I wouldn't consider that a LOW.

When I test drove the 2002 Roush 360R last month I loved the low whine of the supercharger. It reminded me of the "Mad Max" and "Road Warrior" flicks when Mel Gibson pulls up a knob on the shifter to engage something with a similar whine.

Thanks,

That must suck to have bought a Cobra R for $55,000, without a radio, AC, etc., and now you can buy a Mustang that's just as fast for $20K less. Yeah you'd be in a very exclusive owners club, but it wouldn't be worth it to me.

I assume you're talking about the new Cobra and not the Roush that Ahoooo drove. Yes the car is a stock '03 Mustang Cobra. They replaced the aluminum 4.6L v-8 with an iron block 4.6L and threw on an Eaton supercharger with up to 8 pounds of boost for 390 hp and 390 torque.

Here is the car I test drove, a 2002 for $44k with
short-throw shifter, handling package, exhaust sound that you would give your heart for, supercharger, and 18's.
http://www.roushperf.com/360R.htm

http://www.roushperf.com/newsevenst.htm

I wish the Japanese could make a 12 second car for
$35k or even $45k. I love my car but I don't think the Japanese automakers know what the word "torque" means with these little 4's and 6's. How about producing a nice 8.

I think I'm slowly being won over to that good old -fashioned "Detroit Power" and am now willing to give up a little luxury for it.

The Jaguar S-Type R is gorgeous, granted. But the 6-speed automatic transmission (regardless how many gears it has) is awful. It shifts too early so the engine never hits it's powerpeak. It's the same in the BMW 745i, but it makes less of an impact on a luxury sedan than it would on a sports sedan.

That's technically incorrect. When put on a dyno, the S-Type R does make it's true 400HP (I'll look for some charts), it's the transmission that faulters it's performance.

Id rather have the Lingenfelter supercharged corvette in the april 2002 issue....

0-60 in 3.7 sec
0-100 in 7.7 sec
1/4 in 11.7 sec@126mph

All for mid $50's... not bad at all...

They make 13 sec cars...4 and 6 bangers no less....but unfortunately, because they are imports with smaller motors...they are held to a higher emissions standards....and that 8 isn't anything special...it just comes from the factory with a blower. I mean one boost controller and a 3" exhaust on a WRX sti or Lancer Evo...and that mustang would meet its match...and then some.

Incredible, from the factory. Saleen and the other aftermarket dudes cannot be happy as this cuts their sales potentially.

Great car IMO.

I had a Vortech A-trim s/c on my 93' 5.0 and the blower whine at idle is really something! I thought that roots type s/c were quite at idle and really whiny at mid rpm's??

At the track, I've seen a stock internal, 5.0 with 3.55 gears, exhaust, slicks, and 8lb Vortech A-trim bang off 11.99's.

Nah the S-type would just be pimp, put some 20s on it some TV's and it will still be a fast PIMP Ride.

And Ford is claiming that the handling is going to be comapred to an M3. I don't know about an M3 but I'll bet it will be as good if not better than the Z06. Not bad for $35,000 huh!

Eh, not neccessarily. Current Saleen owners might be slightly PO'd, but Saleen can work with this 2003 Cobra as a stock vehicle and make it even better performing.
