21000 out the door for 01 cls w/ navi?
my friend is asking me if that is a good price...the dealer listed the car at 21,900, and wont budge past 21k, saying because the car(red/black leather, auto, 35k miles) is "certified" it justifies the price.
i bought mine not even 3 months ago for 1500 less out the door with 3 k more miles but everything else was the same.
what do u guys think?

The reason it may be a bit high it b/c of the dealer markup. I'd try and take a grand or so off that cars price. However 35k miles ain't alot and i could see why a dealer may not want to budge.

Certified from a dealer is just like buying a used car warranty...so the $1,500 difference is justifiable. They kinda of build that figure in their price.
However, with the quality of the Acura & the used car market right now...he may be better off buying from a private seller if the car in question IS NOT a mint specimen. If I was a buying a Chevy/Ford or even a german car...I'd be more worried about a warranty than with our particular cars relaibility(sans tranny, but that's covered anyhow).

If it is $1,500 more and the car is exactly what your friend wants, it may be worth getting it.
If not, sit it out and wait 3 more weeks. Head back the last day of the month when they need to get as much in of their quota and they will deal.....
I bought my car Halloween 02 and man did they want to move the car out...

Buying private is the best way to go if the miles are reasonable.

update:
today my friend calls me at work, tells me they countered his 19k out the door offer.
they will sell the car un certified for 20,500 out the door including taxes, tags, etc.
if they certify it, then it would be 21,300 out the door.
still too high if you ask me.
i asked how long was the car on the lot, he said he believes over 2 months, and i also told him to hold off a little while it will pay off if he waits a week or so, though hes taking a risk

they are selling it for 21,9
think of it like this. They most likely got the car for 18-19g then add about $850-1000 to certify the car.
And you know what, now that i think about it, there is no way that car can be certified!!! It should still have the original factory warranty on it! you cannot ceritfy a car that still has its original warranty, Id say fuck that dealer.
My opinion, if they wont drop to high 19s on the car walk away. why:
1) car is overpriced, specially on a discontinued model that is not holding its value very well.
2) They are bullshitting you on the "certified" thing. Hell theyll even tell you they paid for the certification (bullshit) when all they did was inspect it. That car should still have the remainder of its original factory warranty.

Your tranny would already be covered up to 100k miles by Honda. 20.5k which includes tax is a good deal for a low mile 01 IMO.

someone please breakdown what warranty is on the car right now, at 35000+ miles, so i can advise my friend the best.
he was caught up on the whole certified thing they had him on, and how they would only sell it for an extra 800.00

Seems to me, that if he doesn't want the extra warranty...he should be shopping in the paper. No need to pay the extra $$$ if he's not into the extended warranty anyhow.
There are cheaper cars out there if that's what he's looking for. EX: I'm selling my 02 for $21,500 w/out navi...there are plenty around here in that price range...so have him check out autotrader.
Heck...there are over 50 in the greater Philly area.

A car that a dealer picks up with a warranty still on it shouldnt be sold as certified, its kinda false advertising, cause a dealer will not pay to certify a car that doesnt need it. Now if the dealer chooses to put an extended warranty on the car, fine, but that still does not make it certified.
When i sold hondas that was how we had to treat those situations, and the same across the country when i bought my 99 CL from an acura dealer. It was not sold as certified because it still had 1.5 years of the original warranty left.

Now, if someone is selling this thing as "certified" without the additional warranty...that's a different ballgame.
I have battles(at work) all the time with dealers trying to justify $3K above book because a car is "certified". Other than a modest increase...say $1,500...they don't get the full approval.

CLS 6MT Navi
Not jiving with my 'Acura certified' experiences. I've had both, in warranty and out of warranty cars certified by Acura. If this 01 CL was bought in June 2000, the factory warranty (4 years) is up in 6 months, June 04, no matter what the mileage is!
Also, the certified warranty does NOT include a lot that the original warranty covers. (They will lie about this usually). No coverage for seats, trim, doors, glass, wear, broken seat motors, broken radio, speakers, no brakes, pads, belts, interior parts, exterior trim and parts, door handles, etc etc. ONLY major mechanicals is covered. Call Acura 800#, they tell the truth about the certified warranty, (my dealer did not!).
On my 95 legend, (out of factory warranty) I got a one year 12k miles 'certified' warranty.
On my 03 CLS, with 3500 miles, I got 1 year added onto the original sale dated 4 year warranty, that's when the factory warranty started. The certified warranty is NOT transferable if you sell the car before it expires.
So when this 01 hits 4 years from ORIGINAL sale date the factory warranty is over. Most 01s are at least 3 - 3.5 years old already, I think they came out Spring of 2000. You must know the original in-service (original sale) date, this is NOT the manufacture date.
Save more and buy from an individual with some warranty left. Get everything fixed that is problematic, this info is on the board.
The '$800-$1000 fee' for 'certification' and 1000? point inspection was a crock, at my old dealer anyway. The passenger seat was stuck, the ignition key very hard to turn, the headlights were WAY out of alignment, a tail light was out, the ABS brake sensor was stuck on, the driver window was not tracking right.
For 'certification' my dealer might have changed the oil and washed the car. But for the year warranty on the 95 Legend I got all the break-prone parts replaced for free the first year.
Good luck.. oh yeah, DON'T fall in love with a particular car. altho the red with black CL combo is somewhat rare.
