2002 CL VS 2013 Accord Coupe
Gents... I have a 2002 CL is on its last legs.... I have no choice but to replace it with another vehicle.
I was thinking to get the 2013 accord coupe (EX-L V6). How would you guys compare the new 2013 accord with my current 2002 CL? Ride wise? Engine wise? Transmission wise? Interior wise? Cabin Noise wise?
Are they even comparable?
I was first looking for the 2012 Accord Coupe but I like the shape of the 2013 better.....

Honestly I really don't think they are comparable because you are talking about cars that are over a decade apart in technology, styling and any other advantages the new car will have. I'm assuming your comparing a type S with a 2013 auto version since you have an automatic currently and just looking at the stats on the 2013 the estimated gas mileage is slightly higher 21/32, it comes with a 3.5 V6 automatic 6speed, that has more horse power than the CLS 260 vs 278 horsepower for the 2013 Honda Accord EXL Coupe. I have never driven the 2013 Accord so I don't know about the ride but there are many sites like Edmunds.com, CarandDriver.com etc that can tell what I listed and more. Good luck with your purchase.

Per todays hp caculations the CL-S's hp number would be 248hp. We can also do the reverse for the 13' Accord if this motor was built in 02 the 02 ratings would be 290hp. Either way the hp difference is 42hp which is BIG...

But, in some ways, it is a natural progression if one wants to get something similar. Still, if there are options (as in a coupe), I would also look at the Infiniti G...

I tend to agree. The Accord coupe should really be renamed the Prelude. My 08 Accord EX-L Navi 4cyl brought back a LOT of memories of my Prelude Type SH. There are no Camry coupes anymore or Altimas so why not rename the Accord coupe what it really is... PRELUDE.

Cylinder deactivation was pretty rough on the 2012 Accord V6 but they changed the system for 2013. Acuras & the 6MT Accord do not have it.

Def do the 2013.
2013 tech is beter than 2002.
I got a chance to drive a 2013 328i for a few hours the other day.
Although I was not totally impress by hp the car drove really well steering was tight, not rattles at all.
Tech was crazy for such a small car.
I had to figure out how everything worked but,It was nice to drive a 2013 with 700 miles on it.
The trans is what made the car to me.
It had a 8spd auto that seamed like it was in it's perfect rpm band every gear so it made the car seams fast.
Also the car had all kinds of extra's you would expect to see on flagship models and the 328 is a low model.
2013 little cars comming with flagship options seams like no comparison choice.
I wish I could get the 8spd auto in the cl.
I can only imagine how fast a new m3 would be since the 328i only has 240 hp but, seams faster than 240hp. I think the newer tech trans might be what is doing it for that car.
65-70 highway was only running 1500rpms wich got to be good at saving gas.
Also when taking my foot off the brake from a stop the car would do a little bang before going.
I said something to my friend and he said it's normal that the engine cuts off or something when stopped. I did not like that feeling it kinda felt the the torque convertor was not acting right but I guess thats to save gas as well.
I did like folding the power mirrors in and out when people pulled up next to me to get them to look at my 2013 bmw (for the day)

Thats newer tech to save gas.
I just looked at the 328 and found this so it's close to what I said from a differn't guys wording.
The standard stop-start system helps save fuel, but it's unrefined in the way it shuts the car down and starts up again. During a test drive, it felt like the 3 Series was stalling at every red light. How can General Motors get a stop-start system so right in something like the cushy Buick LaCrosse eAssist, yet BMW gets it so wrong in the 3 Series
I did also feel like the car wanted to stall a little when coming to the stop. But for me it was more noticable leaving a light with a slight bang. Other than that it drove well.

i haven't tried a 13 accord yet, but i bought an 09 v6 accord sedan and regret getting rid of my cls for it. the accord is nice, but i should have just done the next 105 service, motor mounts, coilover rebuild, brake job, and wheel bearings as well as all sorts of other small issues that needed attention.

The '13 Accord is probably the best mainstream car Honda has ever made. I really do mean that.
The V6 is a beast. Many owners, including a coupe owner I personally know are getting 35 mpg on the highway. Combine that with the awesome engine note, plenty of power and a transmission that always seems to know the right gear, you have a winner.
It's nearly Camry quiet, handles quite well and is comfortable.

Wellllll where should I start....
1. I bought the car in 2005 from ebay. I ran a carfax on it but nothing showed up on it so I went ahead with the purchase. It turns out I was sold a car that had been in a major collision and was completely re-painted. I know I was a stupid fool to fall for it....
2. The trany went south @ 50 K and Acura replaced it with a re-conditioned one.
3. The car now has 150 K miles on it and I fear the transmission might go at any moment. Since I am out of warranty, that's 2K (Is that right?)
4. I never got the 105 K service done as I didn't have the money at that time. So that is about 1K (because to the timing belt).
5. The rotors and the breaks are completely gone and need to be replaced. $200 maybe?
6. The repaint job was horrible and now the paint has chipped off almost the entire car. So it has to be repainted.
7. All four tires have to be replaced. $500 maybe?
8. Battery has to be replaced. $100 maybe?
9. The car is burning oil. I get it replaced every 3K but every-time the Technician complains there is no oil left. If I let it go past 3.5K, the oil light comes on. Not sure whats happening there....
I know all of these are just regular maintenance however, I went and got an appraisal from CARMAX on it and they offered me $1500 for it. And that was 6 months ago with 10K less miles.
Even if I get all the work done, I still have to re-paint the entire car to make it look presentable. Not sure how much that will be?
What do you guys think? Keep it? Dump it?

My rear window is tinted black so Ive never noticed a smokescreen... BUT once I park the car and turn the engine off, black smoke emits from the exhausts for about 5 mins...

I LOVE the CL's Interior. And honestly that's the one thing I will miss about it the most. I test drove the TSX and 12 Accord. Both cam nowhere close my 10 y/o beater. The 12 Accord had a ton of cabin noise and the TSXs interior was just cheap....
This is my opinion only....

But here's the question you need to ask yourself. The car was worth 1400-1500 bux. Would you rather dump more money than what the car is worth for the 105k overhaul plus possible tranny or dump the 1500-3000k in a new car. If your we're an insurance company and you needed say a tranny, they'd list the car as totaled and give you what th car is worth. Now with that said, I wouldn't chuck it if you don't want. Buy your new Honda/Acura product an enjoy all the technology that's offered standard while keeping the CL as a commuter car until maybe a family member has someone that needs a junker car to make it by or a 16yo's 1st car. When I was in high school, I had friends that were learning to be mechanics in the auto mech coarse NC offered. Those friends parents would buy the most run down cars per their kids request so the could learn how to work on them and keep them up in the shop after school. Sure the cars were total JUNK at the start but damn they'd have them running good to get them back/forth to school and work reliably. You'd also make more money at this point as a tax credit donating it to a local high school with an auto mechanics coarse. In Wilmington we have a program where people can donate their cars for battered women with kids and/or similar issues. Just have a talk with yourself about ideas like this.

All excellent points ParaSurfer... It really makes no sense in dumping 3Ks on the CL.... That money is going towards the down payment on the new car...
One more question.... CARMAX said they would offer 1500 for it. Will I get more if I sold it on Craigslist? Or Probably not worth the headache?

Whats up with RDX owners?

If you want it gone right away, then go through Carmax. But if you can sit on it for a while I'd toss it on Craigslist if I were you.

Yeah, definitely dont start dumping money into your CLS now. Its lived a hard life and they are never the same after a hard collision.
If it were JUST maintenance, then sure. By the time you're done fixing all the issues you're probably $6k in the hole and the car is still only worth $3k.
The new Accord is nice, but buying new can be hard to swallow the immediate value loss. If you plan on keeping your next car for 10 years, go ahead and buy new. If not, try to find a 2-3 year old Certified Pre-owned with about 30k miles and enjoy the lower payment and factory warranty. You can get a better equipped used car for less money than a mediocre new....
Maybe look at 04-08 TL's? Same engine and good reliability, as long as you stick with the manual trans.
