2001 Type S @ 210K Worth the Investment?
Hey everyone! I have recently become an enthusiast about the Acura CL Type S, and figured that for my birthday I would go ahead and invest about $3K in a reliable used car.
I found the car of my dreams, a 2001 Acura CL Type S, Black w/Tan Interior & Navigation! Looks like I will be able to talk to seller down quite a bit because it has high mileage (210,000). I am a little concerned though.
My question: Is buying a 2001 Acura CL Type S with 210K on the dash worth the investment?
I don't mind paying for an engine swap if this one dies out, but shouldn't I be worried about other things? The tranny is in good condition.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

one more thing...
I also have the opportunity to purchase a 2002 with 190K on it. Automatic to Manual Conversion (2007 Accord 6-sp Manual).
Problem #1- ECU needs to be reprogrammed.
Probme #2- Throw out bearing needs to be replaced.
$2500.00

Just curious if you are able to take that $3k and throw it down for a lower mileage car and have a low monthly payment instead? It might be worth it to get one with less milage. Just my two cents.

ANY car that's 10 years old with 200+K on it is not worth it. IMHO.
200K miles on this car?
Timing belt/waterpump/plugs if it wasn't done already. $700 range
Trans is always suspect to go out at any time. Easy $2K+
AC compressor, pullies belts hoses all are suspect if not replaced yet
Tires, brakes, engine mounts all wear items.
Basically you need to know what maintenance stuff has been done to the car over that 200K miles. If you can't get that be prepared to shell out $ to fix things as they break.
And BTW don't let the nav fool you. It's a very outdated unsupported system. It's pretty useless these days. You can get a handheld that's better for $50 from costco.

I had a 95' Legend we bought for about $2500 with 190k, and ended up investing about $5000 with a new engine, and head gasket was a constant issue. After the initial problem, I drove it until it had about 220k on it with no issues. But then you have to think about tires and other accessories you are going to invest into it when you may end up getting something newer and sooner.
If you dont mind needing to fix it up, not a problem, but I dont think it would be worth it.

Thanks a lot for your help, sounds like I need to look a different car. Was really looking forward to the CL, but I don't want to be stuck with a car that wont get me from point a to b, especially since I wanted to get at least one cross country trip out of it.
I don't want car payments at all, so that's not an option for me. Guess I'll keep shopping around. Thanks again for your advice.

It will work for that. But it's high miles. You have to be prepared to shell out $ to fix things that just die with age.
Nothing inherently wrong with the CLS besides the trans. The engine is bullet proof.
If you can fine one with less miles. They are at around $5K for a decent one these days.
