09 TL Manifold Install and new CAI planned: aftermarket vs custom?

First off, props to e30 cabrio and civicdrivr for their work on this mod.

I have the TL manifold sitting in my garage and the bored TB/spacer/gaskets are nearby according to FedEx. My AEM SRI is a piece of crapola and I'm so tired of the Starbucks drive-thru people asking me what all the humming sounds are coming from...sheesh.

So I brought my car to my local performance shop (they've done some crazy builds) and I'm currently discussing with them a possible custom intake manifold fab...after pursuing the thought of getting the manifold match painted to anthracite (would require stripping and disassembly of the 3-piece manifold which worried me), I opted to powdercoatvthe intake to match the TB instead).

Questions, what do y'all think about a custom-built vs aftermarket (AEM vs comptech) intake? I'm thinking 4" with an icebox-type deal in the bumper.
They quoted me 400ish, which seems reasonable at this point.
What are your thoughts guys?

Custom intake is next....

$400 for a 4" intake with icebox seems like a good price to me, these engines love to breath so the more you open it up the better

Just make sure you have enough fuel to go with that air

True that...

Yeah, it'll definitely be a step up from my current SRI, IMO

Anyone know of any dynos around the Seatown area? I'm probably gonna get the swap done this weekend sometime if my parts come in.

$400 for a 4" intake? Thats insane. I built mine for ~$150. 4" piping costs a bit more then the 3.5" piping Im running, but not that much. The $150 I paid for materials included the K&N filter and velocity stack. If you are running a ported TB, keep in mind that its not larger then 70mm at the inlet. Thats 2.75". 4" piping would not be worth the added expense in my opinion. Even 3.5" is pushing it.

What exactly do you mean by Icebox thing in the bumper though? Just the velocity stack or are you trying to build an airbox for the filter next to the battery and have a charge pipe from the box to the bumper? Either method shouldn't cost $400 to build though. Some cheap aluminum stock for the box walls and thats pretty much it. Run a pipe from the TB through the box to a filter, then another short section of pipe from the bottom to a velocity stack. I want to build one as well to quiet my intake down, but I havent gotten around to it.

I definitely understand your desire to ditch the AEM intake. Those things are garbage.

I was gonna say the same thing as civic. A 4 inch intake isn't needed if you are running a stock tb. I would say 3 inch is all that is needed. Comptech icebox or the p2r intake are good options. A custom one is another option but I would only do that if it was alot cheaper than the 2 options i listed, or if you have a custom tb that is 75-80mm and need bigger tubing.

Hey guys, good pointers, thanks for the advice!

I've been thinking about just doing an aftermarket intake for the longest time. Yeah, the custom intake seemed steep for me, especially if you figure in the labor costs.

Yeah, I was thinking about an icebox-type intake in aluminum with a velocity stack, but I may just go for the Comptech for cheaper (250ish I'm seeing). Maybe I'll check with P2R and see if they have that intake available as well. Just want to get rid of this annoying SRI

use the stock air box add K&N dropi in run a cutom lower with velocity stack and you have about 99% comp ice box
only diff is a cone in the box instead of flat panel
