03 CL-S 6 spd vs. E36 M3 5 spd MT

Last night, coming home from Q-Zar, I lined up next to one of the guys we went with. He was driving his M3 with two other people in the car, I was driving with my cousin. At the light before getting onto the highway, he was revving at me to egg me on. I think he had some exhaust work done, but I'm not sure, so I'll just say he was stock. It was a two lane highway and we started at around 50 mph. I pulled on him at the top of third (~90 mph); he was at my rear bumper, and by about 110 I had at least two cars on him. We shut it down at that point. I don't know how our cars stack up against E36s, but I'm guessing that his two passengers gave me some kind of advantage. Is this result pretty much expected or was he just a shitty driver? If we were racing without passengers, would I still pull ahead of him? Either way, I had fun. Oh, yeah, I'm stock.

With the weight advantage and from a roll at 50 that sounds pretty reasonable. You've got more power but the E36 is lighter. Of the line I think you would have lost but either way it should be close.

Shouldn't race on public roads but I understand the fun

Nice one

I know. I think the adrenaline rush got the better of me. The road was clear ahead of us and we stopped before we reached any other cars. I know that's not even an excuse...

not an excuse, but we're all guilty of the same to one extent or another...at least you slowed down before you reached the other cars.

Good run man! Off the line those things are beasts but you got the better of him in the top end. Nice kill!

a while's back, i ran aginst my friend's '97 estoril blue 5 spd M3 from a roll of 20 mph. we were neck in neck all through first and second gear. in third he pulled almost a carlength (my front bumper at his rear tire). but once i shifted to fourth, he flew away. literally. my cheap auto tranny just gave the race away but that's our A/T for you.

Thats about right, esp from a roll and him having more passenger. They have about the same trap speed as the CL-S6, but are much better off the line than us. So if you start from a roll it will be very close, with the CL-S6 having the slight advantage, esp once the M3 goes into 4th.

BTW this only applys to stock vs. stock, and equally skilled drivers.

Its a good thing you didnt get going fast cause once those e36's hit 4th gear is when they really start going. Those cars have some pretty crazy top end

Regular result for stock vs stock. M50 manifold and a reflash for the M3 and you'd be in trouble though. Also if there were turns involved, the M3 is way more capable. But good win nonetheless

What? You're saying you put 225 to the wheels? Proof of that statement?

Im going off the top of my head, but E36 = 240hp, E46 = 333hp. Both were 3.2l.

Sounds right, and they weigh somewhere around 3200 pounds (E36) over 200 pound difference vs. a CL, so should stock for stock be competitive with a CLS-6 .

I think it would be competative in a straight line. I think a CLS6 might edge out the e36 in 1/4. Probably a drivers race. I think it would be no competition in the twisties as the e36 should riegn supreme in that area. Just what I think though.
