'02 Altima (0-60 6.28 sec---1/4 mile 14.72 @96.82 mph)

I know, I know...Nissan sucks, right?

But wait!! Before you make any rushed judgements, check out the article in the September issue of Motor Trend on page 98.

For all of you who love a "manual tranny" (like myself) you've got a 5-speed gearbox. Although a 6-speed would have been really nice, Nissan is saving that for the Maxima.

The car only has 240hp and 246 lb/ft torque (which is 14 lb/ft more than ours) but it only weighs 3195 lbs. which explains why it is running CL-S/TL-S numbers (0-60 6.28 sec---1/4 mile 14.72 @96.82 mph). Combine that with the 17 X 7" wheels, dual exhaust, HID headlights & I think we've got some strong competition coming our way this month.

The only thing that sucks is now the Maxima guys really have something to talk about

all i have to say is Acura better get on the ball. Cause if pretty much stock Nissan Maxi can spank a CL Type S that's sad. . Maybe this will force the Gen 3s to come out early for 03 with a 3.5.

Great numbers for the car. Hopefully this will push Acura to provide some real muscle cars.
A guy at work told me that Ford is working at putting the Lightning engine into the new Cobra

?????

The subject is about the '02 Altima, but you close it out talking about Maxima owners. I know the Maxima is going to get HID's, but I don't think the Altima is. BTW, a loaded Altima 3.5 is going to cost as much as a CL so you pick the best. After it's all said and done, everyone is still trying to compare a sedan to a coupe. Until Nissan brings over the Skyline coupe, I don't really care.

altima won't be more than $25K USD loaded. it's stil an economy-type car, not in same luxury league as CL.

I'm glad you get it Mike, whenever anyone raises the bar on performance, it helps all enthusiasts.

The 5.4 SOHC (Lighting motor) with the Eaton blower would be way too tall to go in a Mustang without a HUGE bulge in the hood.

There are rumors of a DOHC 5.4 and/or 5.0 going into later GTs and Cobras. I'm not trying to bash you (or you freind), but that is one of many rumored changes to the Mustang in '03 and '04. I know I'm excited.

My bad, you can get Xenon's on the Altima for $499. And if you think the Altima won't go over $25k, go to Nissan Driven and load one up with what the CL has and from what few options you can choose from it's over $27k (MSRP).

I know it can go to about 27K, but that is MSRP. You know that nobody here paid MSRP ($30,330 no navi)for their CL-S.

Don't get me wrong I "love" the CL-S/TL-S, but I just wanted to show that we do have some competition out there.

If I'm just going to spend $25k on a car with a little class and a little kick ass, then I'm going for a WRX that will smoke both cars by almost a full second to 60.

96mph is a very strong run -- however, those runs were at or very near sea level (if they ran it on the same track they ran the TL-S). Bring that bad boy over here to the midwest, and you can easily add another 3.->.5 seconds onto those numbers. Still, that's pretty quick (but it's still w/ a pro behind the wheel).

Funny how eerily similar the numbers for the '02 Altima are to the '02 TL-S. However, I don't think the TL-S finished at more than 92mph.

I'd still take a WRX over the Altima (if I wasn't worry about size, just performance). The WRX has more modding capabilities.

The Maxima should be running mid to low-14's based on this result w/ a sub-6 second 0-60 rating.

And the infiniti G35 w/ the 260hp, RWD platform (6-spd) should be posting very low-14's -- maybe even a dip into the high-13's?

U cant compare ugly fast cars to good lookin fast cars.

Assuming you are refering to the TLS numbers published in MT back in May, they would be 14.72 at 97.6MPH in the 1/4.

Which by the way, assuming the numbers are comparable, means that the TLS is faster on the big end. Probably meaning that the lighter manual Altima is quicker off the line, with a really good driver. :p

So I'm game to take them on and would expect to win a large majority of the runs. That's assuming the times are really comparable and since they both come from MT the should be.

The only thing that could throw this assumption out of kilt is if MT doesn't adjust their numbers for temperature and altitude.

It makes sense that Acura wait until after the Maxima is introduced to put out the 6 speed type s's. I guarantee that the 6 speed S's will outrun the manual Maximas. Regardless of torque, our top end is so much better.

Nissan has the most assified option system in existence.

If you want HIDs and a 5-speed, you can't get the extra safety protection of the airbag package, or ABS. *blink* That makes a lot of freakin' sense.

If you want HIDs, you HAVE to get the rear spoiler and the sunroof (with the 5-speed). Again, WTF? , but what if I don't want a sunroof?

Want heated seats? Gotta get the automatic.

This is why Nissan is never going to be taken seriously. I realize it's so that Nissan can jack up the price on their car and make more money.I probably won't even consider an Altima because Nissan is so assbackwards.

Nissan is just stupid. Load the car out like Acura does and charge me whatever ... Just don't make things inexpicably mutually exclusive. That pisses me off and makes me not want to buy from them.

I noticed the same thing. It doesn't make sense. Why is ABS and airbags even an option? By now it should be standard equipment. Everything standard, that's one of Acura's key selling points for me.
