#@}%!!! '01 Coin Tray

Damn thing ate more coin(s)! After it ate a penny a year or so ago, I only put quarters in there because of their heavier weight. My dealer was gracious enough to help me out the first time, but now I'm out of warranty and out of freebies.

How can I get that quarter out?! How can I remove the coin try for a little operation?

Guess I'll have to stick with Susan B. Anthonys from here on out. What a lame coin tray. What good is it?! What's worse, the "can't see oncoming cars passenger side view mirror" or "hungry coin tray" ... nevermind the glass tranny and power reducing ECU change.

OK, I feel a little better. Now if I can just get that quarter out...

you know what you should do? Remove that red carpet coin thingy and buy the ashtray one and then use that as a coin tray. Works for my friend with a TL-S even though he doesn't smoke.

Coin Tray Removal

The coin tray pops out- just press on it and work it forward. If it comes out, you still may not get your quarter. I just disassembled the whole darn console to install the factory lighter and tray light. Took 2 hours and six advils. I found two quarters and a penny from the prior owner. Since he screwed me royally on the purchase via Chase lease buyout, to hell with him.

If you want the link for console removal check my earlier post.

I had the same problem with my '01 CLS. If I put too many coins in the tray, they would fall behind it and jam the tray closed. My '03 CLS has a much better coin tray design that prevents coins from falling out and jamming things up.

Sounds like I should upgrade to a '03 6spd or stop accepting coins.

I've never had a problem with my red carpet coin tray. My coins stay in, but I also keep chapstick in there, maybe that helps

I don't know how much money I lost in the ashtray/coin holder. I just let it go, but now I keep it in plastic bags in my armrest.

1. It's not a coin tray. It's the "Not an Ashtray"

2. If you beat the crap out of the side of the console, the coins will drop and then you will be able to shut it.

This solution worked for me:

Chapstick used to live in there with my coins too- didn't help! The solution posted above worked great for me. No more in there for me!

I just leave it in there. It closes just fine. If it doesn't close, I make it close. Still puttin' change it, still losing it too! Who cares. It's only like a couple bucks a year.

yeah.. coin holder sucks.. it make you vunerable to getting jacked too..

I had the same thing happen to me. Not sure if you found out how to get to the coins but I'll give you a quick explanation.

1st: remove the plastic piece right under the "not a coin/not an ashtray" holder. It's should just pop our really easily.

2nd: remove both seat warmer controls. There are 2 clips (on the top and bottom) that need to be pinched so they can be removed.

3rd: the seat warmer controls are connected to a harness which need to be taken off the controls.

4th: completely take out the seat warmer controls and you should be able to just pop of the large plastic piece. It might take a little bit of force but it should pop off.

5th: remove your coins and realize that you just spent 20 minutes to gain $0.50. Reverse steps and put everything back together.

Spend your coins wisely!

The quick fix for the coin tray (if it is jammed )

If you are blessed with a jammed coin tray but are not inclined to disassemble the center console to get your change back out here is a dirty little trick that might help .
Find yourself a nice long thin screwdriver (has to be long) and a flashlight, attach to the end of the screwdriver a bit of sticky tape ( duct tape works but so does a wad of chewing gum) open the coin tray and take a peek inside and you will see the offending coins .With the screwdriver and sticky substance at the end of it you can now fish the coins back out . Should a few of the coins choose to stay put give the center console a few firm smacks on each side with the palm of your hand and the coins will in almost all cases dislodge and you can fish em out with the "special tool" you made . I used this trick countless times to fish out coins on customer cars . Sounds stupid but trust me it works 99 percent of the time .

I tried that and it does work.. however.. make sure you find something that sticks well.. i made the mistake of using just tape.. coins fell in farther...
