Replacing stock tires

I'm replacing the stock Michelins tires at 53k. I have desided to go with a new set of Yokohamas, the only problem that I have is choosing the size"215/50R17 or 225/45R17. Most of the people I talk to say go with the wider tire for better traction and a more agressive look but the only issue that I could see with that is having the tire over lap the rim.

Has anyone used the 225/45R17 and what was your opinion compared to stock?

Actually, your biggest problem with the 225/45/17 is going to be the overall diameter of the tire and wheel being smaller than the OEM size. I would recommend going with the OEM size if possible just because it will maintain your speedometer and odometer accuracy.

Isn't 225/45/17 the OEM size for A-spec equipped cars? I'd think it's fine.

Edit: I think it's fine (see below):

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
215/50-17 4.2in 12.7in 25.5in 80.0in 792 0.0%
225/45-17 4.0in 12.5in 25.0in 78.5in 808 -1.9%

but 1.9% deviation can translate into alot.

I had 225/45's on my stocks, and it felt better. Looked better too, but the tire did bulge out of the rim a little. So, I think a 17x7.5 or 8 would be better IMHO. Which I have yet to put them on.

Did you notice it throwing off the speedo?

i don't think i'd want the tires to buldge out of the rims...

a 215/45-17 size, although may throw off accuracy, seems like a size i'd like to go with...

More wheel gap but a slightly lower ground clearance height. I'd stick w/ 215/50-17, or 225/45-17.

Just a few mph's. Maybe 2 or 3 at the most, but not to sure.
But if u are goin to want to have wider tires, might as well Go 235/45 that stays perfectly at stock Overall Diameter.

Oh, but that means you will have to get new wider rims 17x7.5 or 8, preferably.

And thats where the fun begins!

Good luck

Thanks for all the feedback guys, I desided to get the 215/50 and bite the bullet and buy wider aftermarket rims for the summer.

That's the proper way to do it. Good decision.

I'm starting to get a serious jones for the F1 GS-D3's, but it doesn't look like they come in the stock size. Seems like all the tires I've looked at, max summer types, aren't available in stock size.

Stock size is not going to work for a max performance summer tire because there is too much sidewall. You'll either have to get bigger wheels or downgrade the tires a step to ultra high performance summer tires.

I agree, that's the same route I'm going. I'm going to buy either Avon or Yoko in 235/45/17 summer tires and 7.5" rims.
