Need Help with Wheel/Tire size selection

Hi all - I'm looking into getting some new wheels for my 04 TSX, right now I'm looking at the OZ Canyons. Specs are:

Wheels are 18 x 8 with +40mm offset
Tire size 215/45-18 (what Tire-Rack recommends)

Even though there is a ton of info on this site about aftermarket wheel and tire fitment, its tough for a noob to put it all together to know if a particular combo will work or makes sense for the TSX. So my questions are, is this a good combo and will this work? Any suggestions or anything that is obviously wrong with this setup? My car is NOT lowered.

I have spent some time with Dan Martin's excellent post of Tire/Wheel selection and I like the 0.6% difference between OEM and the 215/45-18 combo.

If 215/45-18 is not the best size for these wheels, what is good alternative?

As a bonus question, anyone have opinions on the Potenza RE050A's?

Thanks!

The RE050A is a good tire. It's actually the oem tire on the 05 g35 coupe 19s. I'd say handling is on par with the michelin pilot sport. Most say it's definitely quieter too. The only negatives IMO are the fairly highly price and low (140) tread wear.
Roadwaywholesaletire.com has the best prices I've seen for this tire if you're interested.

215s are kind of skinny. I'd go with 235/40/18s. 8" wide wheels can actually accomodate up to 245s.

Do you think I would have any issues with rubbing if I ran 235's with +40mm offset?

As I mentioned my car is not dropped.

The front will definitely rub - even w/o lowering. Furthermore, since the car is not lowered, the front tires will appear to stick outside of the wheel well more. If your heart is set on those rims with a +40 offset, I'd go with the 215-45-18s to avoid rubbing.

Alternatively, go with at least a +45 offset if you want to run the 235-40-18s.

225-40-18s would help prevent the rubbing somewhat, but since your car is not lowered and the 225-40-18s have a smaller overall diameter than stock, the car will have even more of a raised 4x4 look.

There's a guy on this forum who posted pics of his TSX w/ ASA ST4 18x8 +40 offset rims and 215-45-18 tires. I think he indicated his tires did not rub.

Alter, and everyone else, thanks for the responses.

Can one of you other wheel/tire experts give your opinion on 215/45-18's with 18 x 8 and +40mm offset?

I've pretty much ruled out 235's due to what I've gathered on this site about the potential for rubbing. So you all understand where I am coming from... I am not looking to do very aggressive changes to my car and I DO NOT want to risk having any rubbing issues... I am not planning to drop the car and I am simply looking for a cosmetic improvement (the Canyons) and better dry weather performance that Bridgestone S-02's or RE050A will give me.

This dude has the OZ Canyons with 225/40-18's. I love the look of these rims on the TSX.

Darkman says he has no rubbing, and his car is lowered.

OK so I ordered the OZ Canyons, with Pirelli PZero Nero M&S, 215/45-18 mounted and balanced from the Tire Rack.

Decided that I didn't want a more aggressive tire in terms of width due to the already low +40mm offset of the wheels I chose. My original choice of tires was Bridgestone RE050A but after reading about the Pirellis and considering the area of the country I live in (where snow is always a possibility even in late Oct or early November, the all-season performance combined with high wet and dry performance sold me. I'll be able to put the OZ's on the car sooner in the spring and leave them on later in the fall than if I had gone with the RE050A's. I'll post pics and a review of the tires once I get them on the car...probably around 2 weeks from now.

They were on my doorstep when I got home tonight.

They look good on my living room floor - I'm sure they'll look better on the car though. I'll try and get some pictures up in this thread soon.

As promised, here are some pics. I apologize for the somewhat crappy quality, I'm not sure I'm taking full advantage of my digital camera's capability. Anyway it was raining so that's my excuse.

Enjoy and let me know what you think!

The 215's are probably not the ideal tire for an 8 inch wide wheel. However, I really wanted these particular rims and they only come in +40 mm offset. So.....to avoid the issue of having the wheels stick out too far, and rubbing issues if I ever lowered, I went with 215's.

The PZero's seem to still be breaking in, I only have about 220 miles on them, so they'll probably continue to improve but I can tell already that the dry traction is better and the wet traction is much better.

I'm still trying to decide about the lowering part. I know it would look better but I know nothing about the subject (yet). I don't want a harsh ride - I already improved handling by adding the Comptech front strut bar and rear sway - I like how the car is set up now.

I neglected to do a side by side comparison between these and the stock rims and tires for weight. Going by how it felt to lift them onto the rotors, I'd say they're probably 2 - 3 lbs lighter than stock, but not much more than that.
