How tight should rear swaybar bushing bolts really be?

I recently had to replace my progress rsb bushings with some prothane bushings. Since I don't know what the spec is, I just tightened the bolts around the greased bushings by hand (socket wrench) until I couldn't get them any tighter. Unfortunately, I don't have a torque wrench. I noticed that tightening them all the way like this even without air tools makes the grease squish out of the bushing around the bar because the bushings become very compressed. Is this an issue? Should I be backing off the bolts just a bit for more longevity of the bushing grease? Or is "as tight as you can make them by hand" just fine for these?

The proper torque is 16 lb ft. I would say tightening them with a socket wrench would be more than enough.
