Grooves on rear rotors...?

I've noticed that my rear rotors has a lot of small grooves on them, and on one side there's a deeper one...

I have about 68k miles on the car and the rear rotors haven never been replaced. The pads were replaced at 40k, I think, and it looks like there's still a lot of life on them when I checked them a couple of months ago.

The fronts are also running Hawk HPS with OEM rotors (replaced at 35k under warranty), and they look okay.

I know it's probably time to get the rear rotors replaced, but I'm just wondering where the grooves are coming from? It looks like the pads are wearing okay, not excessively quick, and haven't noticed anything else abnormal.
