Question Blizak v. X-Ice ?

Going to limit choice to Blizzak WS-50, or Michelin X-Ice.

Average 5 feet of snow per year. Lots of dry pavement, hard packed snow that is kind of like ice, and wet conditions.

Highly variable road conditions, not the deep snow that is the problem. Problem generally is hard pack snow or ice.

Know that there are alternatives, but the providers are not reliable.

Blizzk is a well known solution. X-Ice is not.

Anybody have the X-Ice?

unless the x-ice is different in the us, it scored pretty well in recent tests over here in snow country. well up there with the gislaved (nord frost 5) and the nokian (hakka 5), so unless you can get those, i'd say go for the x-ice. blizzak haven't done that well in recent years as far as test results go, they were by far the best some 5 years ago.

Winter Sport M3's! We don't get much snow here in Chicago either and I would never buy another snow tire. They'd have to stop making these for me to switch...

I've got the X-Ice and I can say that they work well on the TSX (we've already had some major snow here in Calgary). My only experience with Blizzaks were the original WS-50s only my 97 Civic. TSX is much heavier but has VSA and ABS.

Got the Blizak via tirerack, final installed cost was $200 less than best of three local bids.

Dealership installed for just $15.50/wheel. They said they balanced the tires on the car, a feat no local tire shop can accomplish. Dealership scratched the heck out of each wheel, I can fix somewhat with polish. Guess I got to pay my quality tuners $30/wheel not to get scratched.

Blizak is worse than oem on dry and wet. I kind of enjoy it, always said nothing could be worse than the oem, and I finally found it. When the Blizaks cave at about 0.5G, the pitch is much lower than the howl of the oem's.

Blizaks require much more steering input than oem, and that is a lot. Based upon carrying of tires about, Blizaks weigh about 50% more than OEM.

Will update with snow and ice reports.
