Exclamation All-Season Tires!?

Hey,

I am looking to get all season tires for my TSX....i know a winter / summer set would be ideal, but I dont have money for that and my stock Michelin MXM4 are shot now after 23K, thus I need to buy a set.

By searching I read that people have had success with the Avid 550's as well as the Bridgestone Turanza LS-V.. Tirerack seems to have great reviews from fellow TSX ownders. Others?

The stock Michelin's were crap and too sensitive for me, and I am looking to get something with good all year round traction and something great in rain and in I guess snow as well, if possible.

I have had light steering pull and someone suggested that it was the Michelin's and that its a problem with directional tires.. Are any of these directional and do you guys recommend directional ones? I would like tires less likely to tramline as mine do and be harder to turn.

Sorry for the long post, but I'm new to this.

Thanks,

It seems that the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS got the best reviews but it didnt get any remarks on snow...i find that a little odd.

Whats your take on directional tires and how can one tell if they are directional or not....like i said i heard that they tend to promote greater steering and sensitivity, and having a sensitive wheel that flies left and right is what I have now and i want it gone at all costs.

Also, since mine just went at 23K...which is horrible to me...i want something durable.

So Ive searched a billion forums and tirerack some more and I am in between:

Bridgestone Turanza LS-V and Yoko Avid V4S...

according to tire rack, the Bridgestone has the up on #'s in the rain/traction/noise/quality categories. This is stuff I am really looking for.

Any takes?

^^Your stockers went at 23K? You must drive the heck out of your car. I'm at 19K now, with no signs of them wearing out in the next 5K. They're hard as rocks as far as I can tell.

By most accounts, the V4's give excellent performance. Try searching in wheels and tires for threads.

My understanding is the Turanzas are more pedestrian than the Avid V4s w.r.t. spirited driving. I have the Avon (not Avid) M550's that I think you mentioned earlier. I love them, they're very highly rated at TireRack and well priced. Terrific on dry pavement, truly incredible in rain, and good in snow (this is where I've heard V4s might suffer a bit).

how did you wear out your oem tires in 23k miles? aren't they suppose to last some 50k+ miles?

Those Bridgestone RE960AS tires are brand new, which is why there is no snow performance history for them.

I ordered my 205/60-16 Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3's today; the new 3D tire might not be available in TO until after December 1st, and on the drive to London, Peterborough and north, I won't risk waiting on the stock rubber too long.

Everybody, thanks so much.

tinter: yes, they are worn at 23K ...i bought the car pre-owned with 17K on them and it had a big amount of steering problems...it pulled right, had the control arm on the front replaced, new rotors, new brakes, and so on....so i assume that had something to do with it.

gdcwatt: Yea, it does seem that the Bridgestone RE960AS tires are new, and at $170 a tire @ good old' tire rack, I can't justify spending that much money. The maximum I really wanna go is the $149 for the Turanza LS-V....the reviews overall are not that much better in my opinion...short of anybody else here saying otherwise.

peter_bigblock: I really like the pricing on the Avon, but the only thing keeping me away is the no-treadlife warranty...I REALLY dont wanna spend another $600 or so in another 30K. Which makes the Yokos nice, since they have a 60K warranty...but seem to have worse rain/snow traction than the Avons or the Bridgestone.

Such an important decison, yet soo hard to make

Looks like we are in the same boat now. My research result concur with yours. Have to put in some balance between Yokohama, Bridgestone and Avon. Please let us know your final decision.

I love my yoko V4s. They were really quiet at first compared to stock. After about 10000 miles they are still really quiet, of course they have gotten slightly louder. But that will happen with all tires when they start to wear a little bit.

They do great in the rain and puddles as well even at highway speeds. I like them a lot.
Dont get much of a chance to test them in snow since i'm in Georgia and it doesn't snow much here at all.

Still waiting for mine to wear all the way down...which is close, but it looks like I'm gonna go with the Bridgestone LS-V......the light snow and rain traction seems better on them than the Yoko and thats important for me in NJ...i can see that not being a problem in states with warmer climates.

The Avon's really have good reviews, but I dont know much about the brand, and I am a little unsure about their tread life...especially b/c of no warranty on it.

Only thing that really hits me is paying 200 more for the Bridgestone than the Avons .....and ultimately not knowing whether its the best financial move.

I agree, since my research has led me to the same exact place as you . I still really can't decide which tire to buy out of the 3. I have 57.5k on the car now (since april 04) so hopefully I will make a decision by the end of November with just about 60k on the odometer and in time for winter.

Here is the data:

Yokohama AVID V4S : $110 VR 500 AA A 1433 lbs 50 psi 10/32" 25 lbs 809

Bridgestone Turanza LS-V : $149 VR 400 AA A 1521 lbs 50 psi 11/32" 26 lbs 837

Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 : $194 VR 300 AA A 1433 lbs 41 psi 10/32" 23 lbs 819

And the sequence showed above is Cost Per Tire at Tire Rack, Speed Rating, UTQG Data, Max Load, Max Inflation Pressure, Tread Depth, Tire Weight and Revs Per Mile.

LS-V seems to be doing better in snow than V4S while V4S has better tread life and cheaper.

My TSX also seems to go whichever way bumps on the road go and wheel turns while i brake.....I read in the tests that the Bridgestone are a little harder to turn than the Yokos. Anyone confirm?

I am looking for something to resist the insanely sensitive wheel I have from sending me off the road....especially in bad weather.

Can you afford a set of snow tires? I just ordered Dunlop Sport M3s from TireRack for winter. They'll definitely do better in winter. I'm in Jersey, too, and while our winters don't compare to MN or anything, I still want something that will help keep me on the road in bad weather.
