215 vs 225 in Yokohama V4S

Anyone see any advantage in going to the 225/50R17 vs the 215/50R17 tire? Both are available from Yokohama... price difference is negligible... a buck a tire.

I'm told the TSX is 'undertired' and the 225 will provide slightly better traction, cornering grip, braking as there is a larger tread footprint. It only affects the speedo by 1.5%....

Thoughts?

i'd go for the 225 series tires. not only for reasons you stated above, but also because the tire is slightly wider, meaning it will help cushion against nasty curb scrubs on your wheels.

I'm running on the H4S - 225/40/18. Great traction compared to stock. Quiet too. 225's over 215's definitely. More contact with the road on wider tires.

where are you getting them, and how much?

i wouldn't mind grabbing a set of 225/45/17.

Don't forget, this size is -1.9% of the stock, so your speedo will be slightly off.

I know because I'm on Yoko ES100s 225/45/17 right now. I definitely prefer the wider tire.

Yeah, but isn't the 225/45-17 the stock size for A-spec wheels? Do they change the speedo from the factory in this case?

The TSX being undertired has less to do with the tire size and more to do with the tire choice.

That said, I'd still go with the wider tire to give you that extra bit of available traction, especially at the negligible price difference.

Not sure. I've wondered this myself. I have data (mpg) that supports the fact it is nearly unnoticeable as far as mileage goes. I also know the speedo is pretty accurate up to 45mph (got radared once).

so 225/50/17 will fit on the stock rim with no problems?

Acura is said to always "undertire" their cars. Meaning they choose tires that satisfy a wide range of variables, at the sacrifice of "at the limit handling".

If you simply get a great performance tire, in the factory size, you should notice a big improvement. I had odometer, and fuel estimate errors in my VW by going "plus 0", as you are suggesting with the wider tire. To truly go "plus 0" you would also get a tire that changes the sidewall to width ratio, (the 45 and 50 literally means 45% and 50% of the width). On the other hand, you can always confirm your speedo by using the GPS unit in your dash.

Absolutely. Those are a better fit (from a revolution/mile) than 225/45/17. You just get more sidewall than the 215/50/17.

if gettin new wheels isnt out of the question too....supposedly 17x7.5-8.0
gettin 235/45's would be an even better upgrade. Wider, and matches overall diameter almost perfectly.
just my

besides the speedo being slightly off......are there any other cons to getting the 225?

if I go with the 225 series , do I get the 225/50, 225/45, 225/40 ??? Seems like all 3 are being run with the stock rims.

I guess depending on offset, but would 235s fit alright? I did the math and they are only ~0.1" from the stock 215/50 height wise.

Someone at the Tire Rack that could easily tell you what the proper setup is.
