Question 18" wheels - opinions? pros/cons?

Wow, first I want to say this site rocks...I've learned more about the TSX from all these threads then all the magazines and other online srcs I've been reading

www.acura-tsx.com

I haven't seen any threads on 18" rims yet since everyone seems to have the "go speed racer go" mentality (esp focusing on the lighter wheel/stickier tire combos). me too till i got pulled over last nite for 48 in a 35mph...c0p$

So I'm thinking about getting 18"s to go for the cosmetic upgrades instead of speed...
I checked tirerack.com and the preferred tire is 215/45/18. So here are my ?s:

- Has anyone put 18"s on their TSX yet? pics?
- If so, what's the recommended offset for the wheels?
- What type/size tires do y'all recommend and is there any rubbing?

i believe the stock TSX wheels are the same size as my CLS wheels so our options might be about the same. Those being that usually with a drop a +45 or higher offset is necessary so you don't rub. And depending on the offset, 235/45s can work if you want to go that wide. But most prefer 225/45s.

Are you talking about 18" rims or 17" rims? 235/45/18 or 225/45/18 are kinda tall if you compare them to the stock size.

yeah, I wasn't thinking. with 18s 235/40s are very close to the stock overall diameter, but 225/45s are close too.

cool tire size calculator

According to the miata tire calculator,

215/50/17 - Diameter = 25.5" (stock)
215/45/18 - Diameter = 25.6"
225/45/18 - Diameter = 26.0"
235/40/18 - Diameter = 25.4"

So with the 225/45/18 it's another 0.5" taller...so it will prolly look strange unless i lower my car. so in terms of height I can go with either 215/45/18 or 235/40/18...has anyone gone with either of these two? pix?

David McDavid. Those damned Texas shaped dealer logos annoyed the hell out of me when I lived in Dallas. But I even saw one HERE in Portland the other day on an older Acura Legend! Ahhhh....no escaping!

Jeez Ebcheon , I'm just tryin to butter him up a little so he'd tell me the size and offset as I'm all worried about tire rub. Being that I'm shopping for wheels, I'm interested in what fits... that's why I asked the size and offset. I would never buy those particular wheels. My tastes go away from JDM "tuner" style wheels to something more European-looking. It's a pain finding an affordable non-tuner style 18x7" wheel in 5x114.3 with a high enough offset. I've spent hours looking to no avail...

yeah i noticed the wheel gap too, being that its a black car it shouldn't have been that noticeable...maybe its just the angle...still a nice ride nevertheless coz it's a TSX!!!

Eric, what is wheel/tire size?

You guys are crazy. Those wheels look GOOD. It does need to be dropped an inch or two, though.

In Japan, Phase put 18" wheels on the Accord EuroR. The wheel size and tire size are big, 18x9 (I forgot what the offset was) with 245/40/18. It looks really nice, but I think there was quite a bit of fender mods to fit them on. There's also another company/tuner in Japan who put 19" wheels on (with 235/35/19 tires), however that car looked ugly. It's got an ugly bodykit on, and the 19" wheels looked so ghetto. I don't know if there are any pics of these cars on the internet, but I have pics of these two cars in a Japanese magazine.

Size/Offset

Thanks for the Compliments/Suggestions

The most common remark was..."Looks like a BMW/Audi"

Specs:

18x7.5
5X114.3
42mm Offset
Hankook Ventus HR2 Tires
225/40-18

Subjective Eval:

Quiet ride, smooth tires, no rub, etc.

The Tire/Fender Gap could be reduced a little bit, but I'm sure this could be corrected with some AM springs. If we have a customer that is hard-core, we will put them in touch with someone like JOTech. We had a crowd of people looking at this car all day Saturday on the showroom floor. It took 1 day to sell.

In fact, the dialogue with the customer went like this...

Client: "We like this car."

Sales Person: "So, you are in the market for a Black TSX."

Client: "No we want THIS TSX with THE WHEELS!!!!"

Thanks for the compliments, if anyone has any questions, I'd be more than happy to help.

Eric

Thanks for the pics -- i've been waiting to see a pic of a car with 42mm offset wheels. Do you have any other pics from straight on or straight behind? Specifically od the wheels tires fit outside the fenders flares are are they flush?

IN terms of the wheel gap that combo is the same as going to a 225/45/17. You add ~.25 inch wheelgap all the way around as the wheels have .5 inch less diameter. It's not a huge incrase but it's definitely noticeable. I think with some comptech springs it would look great though.

So in yoru subjective opinion did the difference in offset make a differences in teh ride of the car from stock? I know you said it was still good but was it noticeable?

Hey! Welcome to the forum man.
I'm not sure if you realized this, but Danny25's post is almost 3 years old. I'm going to guess that you probably won't get a response

Hey guys I am deciding between 235 40 18 and 225 40 18. Does anybody have 235 40s out there and experience tire rubbing?

I am also thinking of getting coilovers or new springs to lower my car. Any thoughts and just wondering how low should I go?

I believe Acura recommends 225-40-18.
