Yet another cure for the squeaking sunroof

For a while I was having this annoying problem with the sunroof squeaking. It seemed to be particularly bad when the car was cold, and only happened when the sunroof shade was open and the sunroof itself was cold. Following XplorX4's VERY helpful advice, I tried putting some lubricant on the gasket around the top of the sunroof. That worked OK, although I still had some problems and it it only took a few weeks for the squeaks to come back.

So, I tried something new today. I used Vinylex Protectant on all of the rubber and plastic parts of the sunroof. Now, the squeaks are 100% gone.

Vinylex probably worked well because a) it cleaned the gaskets nicely, getting rid of grit that caused noise, b) it makes all the gaskets smooth and slippery.

Anyway, Vinylex is availabe at any Pep Boys and is useful for cleaning and protecting all the vinyl and rubber surfaces in your car (including tires). If you use it on your sunroof, it will do a nice job of silencing the squeaks.

I havent tried vinylex, but I used 303 protectant (Which is what i use for my vynol, rubber, etc) on my sunroof seals and it works great. No more squeaking.

I think basically you just got to get the seals slippery and clean.

303 and Vinylex are very similar products. Both should get the job done nicely.
