Transmission whine in 1st - 3rd gear 5AT
I apologize if this has already been addressed... I search the forums, but couldn't find my exact issue...
I just bought a very clean 2004 TSX 5AT with 118k on the odometer. Test drive was great. Tight, powerful, fun!
Anyway, on the way home I started to hear a whine coming from the car in 1st - 3rd gear. The wine changes pitch with rpm. As soon as the car shifts into 4th gear, the whine disappears immediately.
Everything else is spot on with the tranny. Punctual, smooth shifts.
Is this whine something to worry about? The car came with a 3 month powertrain warranty (not Acura).

Does the sound disappear if you are in gear and you take your foot off the gas pedal? Does it reappear if you again give it gas?

I'm pretty sure its always there. Like if I manually downshift during deceleration I can hear it. Its not a bad sound, just odd that it's only there in the first three gears.

Try it out the next time you are in car. Go at a steady speed without upshifting or downshifting. Wait till you hear sound and then let your foot off the gas. does sound stay there or disappear?

I don't think mine does it in first gear or second gear.
I hear it from 35 mph to 70mph when going at steady speed. It sounds like the faint noise that comes from a coffee pot when coffee is brewing. As soon as I take my foot off the gas, sound disappears.
I believe your car is fine.
It is normal for this car.
I have had a 2005 TSX since new and it has always done it.
Many members of this board and other TSX boards have mentioned this sound that goes away as soon as you take your foot off the gas and leave it in gear.
My car now has over 100,000 miles. Shifts perfectly.

POWER!!
It's probably diff whine, mine has it too, but more of a whine rather than a whistle. Only does it above 35 mph. Its pretty normal, I wouldn't worry about it.
My tranny shifts like a champ, even if it does make some sound. Like I said I don't think its anything to worry about.

My car shifts great, but it also has this transmission whine. Its reassuring to read other people have this as well without any problems.
since my transmission isn't slipping, I think its a good time to do preventative maintenance on it and change the oil. *knock on wood* hopefully all comes out well.

This is common for this car. My car is almost 10 years old. I have had the car since new when it only had 3 miles on odometer. Have put 110,000 miles plus on the car. Every shift is done correctly. I have heard that sound from the beginning. Goes away when I take foot off the gas. No problems shifting at all during my 10 years with the car. Car has been SUPER SOLID and I would buy again in a heart beat.
