Thumbs down Is Stock Battery Really This Lousy or What ?

I was cleaning interior today - doors open, in-dash DVD player playing "Cold Mountain" on Navi screen.
After just a little over an hour (when Inman finally got back to Ada), I shut everything off but the car wouldn't start (gauge just flickers). So I jumped it with portable jumper.

So I had the following things on:
DVD player (2 amps)
Navi ( ? amps)
Stock Audio (? amps)
Interior lights (? amps)
TV tuner (0.3 amps)

So is the stock battery really this shitty or I should worry about something else ?
How much $ do you think the battery is worth ?

Not really. Current draw is continuous, you were running things for over an hour, you were drawing tens, if not hundreds, of amps.

Umm...if you were running all those things off the battery for an hour, then it should drain. That's a lot of equipment to run. Plus, the batteries on Acuras are usually not intended for you to be able to run a bunch of different aftermarket A/V equipment off of it for an extended period of time.

speaking about the battery, its kinda sad/interesting to see that if u happen to roll the windows down or lock the doors the revs jump a bit. this only happens within a few second after starting...
yes starting the car pulls ALOT of the battery, but the other side of the coin the battery is small. but yeah i noticed that once when i hadnt lowered the windows with the fob and was quick on the down button, ususlly im buisy checking stuff while the car first starts so im pretty cautious now about using the electronics right away.

huh ? the only non-stock things going are:
DVD player (2 amps)
TV tuner (0.3 amps)

Is that excessive ?

add: oh and the "Dom's Conveter" but still....

If you want a battery with much more CCA, checkout my writeup on the optima redtop. hehe
Put one in and it starts like a charm. Counted about 3 churns of the starter this afternoon and i can run stuff if i want to for a little while without it going completely dead. It fits perfectly into as well and even has that JDM look to it.

yes I think I read a couple of your posts on this topic, good ones thanks.
One is about "deep cycle" - so what's Redtop's CCA and is it 'deep cycle" ?

Deep cycle means that the battery is made to drain really low and not get damaged when you charge it back up and you keep doing that over and over again. You wont need that unless you are running heavy wattage with an aftermarket system.

The redtop's cold cranking amps/amps is 3x that of the stock battery. So you do the math. It definately sufficient for running your stock equipment for a long while without starting the car. Plus yuo'll get quicker starts. Read about this in the write-up. I wrote like a whole essay on it with pics and step by step how to do the install since you have to slightly modify something.

I've heard some folks (back when i used to drive a 4runner) on the toyota boards that thier batteries have last them close to 10 years.

CCA isn't what matters for battery life look for the capacity rating (measured in amp-hours).

How much did you pay for the Optima Redtop battery, and where did you get it?

Nav Drain?

I recently acquired an '04 TSX and after reading many of the posts here at Acurazine, I ordered some Zaino, got a claybar, bought the USA SPEC PA11-HON2 iPod adapter, and set aside this entire weekend to get to work on my car.

I recently owned an '99 Integra and while I'm working on my car, I'm used to keeping the windows rolled down and the CD player going for at least a good hour or so as I'm waxing, detailing the interior today. Today, though, as I was working on the TSX for about a half hour, I decided I needed to move the car when much to my surprise: It didn't start (the instrument panel just "flickered" as originally described). I was pretty disappointed and had to ask my roommate for a jump.

Fuckleberry: I noticed that you also have an '04 w/ Nav. It looks like I'm experiencing the same exact thing that you are. I'm wondering if the nav is drawing so much current that it's quickly draing the battery. I'd be interested to hear if any non-nav folks (preferably with an '04 that also still has the OEM battery) have similar or longer battery usage times...

It's not advisable to leave the nav screen on for long periods of time without the engine running (alternator). My sales guy told me that the first day.

Red face

fuckleberry,

I don't remember specifically - I know I had the key in "Accessory" mode but after I changed the radio to "CD" mode (to play the CD), I just kinda left the car as is while I did my business... I guess the nav screen would be on then...

... but even if I had turned off the display (by saying "Display Off" or otherwise), I was inferring that the active nav computer might still be the biggest drain to the battery. I'm not sure if there's a way to disable the computer or turn it off while the key is in "Accessory" mode... that's why I was asking to see if anyone around here has a non-nav so we could compare battery life times...
